UNITED STATES PATENT EFTCE.
ALBERT HENRY MAXWELL, OE OOUNOILA R-LUFFs, iOwA, AND GORDON o. Y DIMOOK, OE NEWMAN GROVE', NEBRASKA.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,837, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed December 3, 1898. Serial No. 698,190. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT HENRY MAX- WELL,residing at Council Bluffs,in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, and GOR- DON C. DIMOOK, residing at Newman Grove, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Draft-Equalizer, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in draft-equalizers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of draft-equalizers and to provide a simple and inexpensive one designed for use on plows and adapted to equalize the draft of four'horses and enable one of them to walk in the furrow and three on unplowed land.
A further object of the invention is to prevent any side draft and to enable the parts to be adjusted so as to equalize the draft between horses of unequal weight.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described,.illus trated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In .the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a draft-equalizer vconstructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional viewtaken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4L is a detail plan view illustrating the arrangement of the equalizing-levers.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a main whiftletree centrally connected with a plow-beam' by means of a clip or clevis 2 and having one end pivoted,
by means of a bolt 3 or other suitable fastening device, between a pair of straps 4,which are similarly secured to the upper and lower faces of the doubletree 5, whereby the latter is connected with the adjacent end of the main whiftletree 1. Sngletrees 6 and 7 are pivoted to the ends of the doubletree 5 or otherwise connected to the same, and the .outer horse, which is designed to be hitched to the singletree 6, walks in a furrow, while the adjacent horse travels nearly in front of the plow on unplowed land. The other end of the main whiftletree l has a straight equalizing-lever 8, connected to it bya pivot 9, located at one side of the center of the lever 8, and the inner end of the straight equalizinglever S Y is connected by a pair of links or straps 10 with a front equalizing-lever1l, located in advance of the rear equalizing-lever 8, as shown. The levers 8 and 11 extend longitudinally of the main whiflietree 1, and the front equalizing-lever is provided at its inner end with a curved arm 12, extending rearward and connected bya pivot 13 to the main whifletree 1 at a point adjacent to the pivot 14 of the strap or clevis 2. The rear equalizing-lever is provided at its lower face with a spacing plate or piece 15, terminating short of its inner end and providingaspace between the same and the main whiftietree 1 for the head of the pivot of the straps or links 10. The arrangement of the front and rear levers 8 and 11 equalizes the draft and prevents any side draft. The main whifiietree 1 is provided at its center with a series of perforations 16, adapted to receive the pivots 13 and 14, and when one or two of the draft-animals are of less weight than the others the heavier animals are attached to the singletrees 6 and 7 and the lighter animals are hitched to singletrees 17 and 18, located at the Outer ends of -the levers S and 11, and the pivots 13 and 14 are adjusted toward the lighter animals The outer ends of the levers 8 and 11 are provided with perforations 19 and 20 to permit the adjustment Of the singletrees 17 and 1S, and the singletree 17 is connected with the rear equalizing-lever by a pair Of straps or links 2l.
The invention has .the following advantages: 'Ihe draft-equalizer, which is simple and inexpensive in construction, is designed especially for plows and is adapted to equalize the draft of four horses 'and enable one of them to walk in the furrow and the other three on unplowed land, and it absolutely prevents any side draft. The parts are also capable of adjustment, so as to equalize draft when one or more of the horses are of less weight than the others.
IOO
Changes in the forni, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrifieing any of the advantages of this invention.
. Vhat is claimed isl. A draftequalizer comprising a main transverse Whiffletree provided with a device arranged between its ends for connecting it with the beam of a plow, singletrees connected with one end of the main Whiffletree, the transversely-disposed rear equalizing-lever 8 pivoted to the other end of the main Whifletree, the front equalizing-lever 11 located in advance of the lever 8, and disposed transversely, its inner end being provided With a rearwardly-disposed arn pivoted to the inain Whifetree, means for connecting the inner end of the rear equaliZing-lever with the front equalizing-lever, and singletrees connected with the Outer ends ofthe equalizing-levers, substantially as described.
2. A draftequalizer comprising a main Whi'flietree provided at its center with a series of perforations, a centrally-arranged fastening device provided with a pivot passing through one of the said perforations, a doubletree provided with singletrees and connected With one end of the main Whiffletree,
a rear equalizing-lever pivoted to the other ALBERT HENRY MAXWELL. GORDON C. DIMOCK.
