. DRAFT nrrncnmnnr.
Specification of Letters Patent 7 Application filed March 20, 1.912. 'sen iiiiotaaiso.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, ADMIRAL N. De Guorr and CORNELPA A. CRANDALL, citizens of the United States, residing at Pine River, in the county of Vvausharaand State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Attaclr. ments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in three horse eveners and an attachment therefor, whereby if either of the forward wheels of a vehicle strike an obstruction the draft of all the horses is thrown on the obstructed wheel or that side of the vehicle till it draws as easy as the side not obstructed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a draft attachment of this haracter which will possess advantages in points of efiiciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of constructionand the combination and arrangement of parts herelnafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawing in' which Figure 1 is a top lan view of the front portion of a vehicle rame showing our improved draft attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the draft member.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing 1 indicates the forward axle and 2 the forward ends of the hounds, between which is pivotally secured the inner end of the tongue 3. A draft member 4 is provided which comprises an elongated body portion 5, having the two curved diverging arms 6 formed integral therewith and projecting from each side thereof, said arms having their outer ends extending downwardly so as to project below the lower side of the tongue.
An extension 7 projects rearwardly from the body portion, at the intersection of the arms 6, said extension being disposed intermediate of the two arms 6 and provided with a longitudinal slot 8 adapted to receive the headed bolt 9 carried by the tongue. By this construction it will be seen that the draft member 4 is mounted on the tongue for "longitudinal movement. An elongated plate 10 is provided having one end secured to the tongue adjacent the in nor end thereof, and having its other end mounted on the: bolt 9 and disposed between the head of the bolt and the extension 7. 7
Connected to the outer ends of the arms 6 by means of the hooks 11 are the draft. chains-'12, said chains having their other ends connected to the collars 13 by means of the hook 14 engaged in openings formed in the ends of the collars. The collars 13 are mounted on the axle adjacent the inner end of the spindle so that the pull will be as near he wheels as possible.
Securedv to the forwardend of the draft member 41 by means of the king bolt 15 is the main evener bar 16 which is provided at each end with a plurality of openings 17 openings 17.- Pjivotally secured to the other end of the bar 16 by means of the clevis 22 is the long evener lever 23, which is provided at its central portion with a plurality of openings 2% adapted to register with the openings 17 in the bar 16, whereby the lever 23 can be adjusted longitudinally on the bar 16 by having the pin 25 passing through any one of the openings 17 and 24. Pivotally secured to the outer end of the evener lever 23 is the double-tree 26.
A connecting bar 27 is connected to the inner ends of the levers 19 and 23 by means of the short links 28, which extend at right angles to the connecting bar 27 and thelevers 19 and 23, said bar being pivotally mounted upon the king bolt 15. It is often the case where three horses are hitched to an evener of this character that one or more of the horses will be heavier than the others, if for instance two heavy horses are secured to the doubletree 26 and a lighter horse se- It is to be fully understood that the three horse evener herein shown and described is the main feature of our inventionwhile the draft attachment shown andv described is designed especially for use with our improved evener, and it will also be understood that this draft attachment can be used with any number of horses described.
From the above description taken in connection with the drawings it will be seen that by having the evener secured to the outer end of the draft member the pull will be directly from the outer ends of the axle, thus if either of the forward wheels strike an obstruction the draft of all the horses is thrown on that wheel or that side until it draws as easily as the side not obstructed. The vehicle is thus directly actuated through the medium of the forward axle l, and because of the equalized operative strain or draft upon the axle 1 the pole 3 is prevented from lateral oscillation 0r wabbling and the consequent interference of the same with the draft animals.
It will be understood that this draft attachment can be used on heavy farm machinery, such as binders, mowers, manure 1 Spreaders, etc., or it may be used on wagons or other lighter vehicles.
While we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of constructlon and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying our 1 invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is A device of the character described, including an evener bar having a plurality of openings formed therein at each end, levers disposed on the ends of said evener bar and each lever formed with a plurality of openings extending therethrough, clevises extending through registering openings of the levers and evener bar and designed to be shifted in and out, whereby to change the fulcrunied points of said levers intermediate of the ends of the latter, a swingletree connected to the outer end of one of said levers, a doubletree connected to the outer end of the other lever, a connecting bar mounted between the lnner ends of said leconnecting bar and pivotally connecting the ends of the connecting bar to the levers, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
