SOFT-METAL CAP FOR PROJECTILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS C. TIPPER,J r. residing at Avalon,in the county ofAllegheny, and CHARLES P. VVATsoN, residing at York, in the county of York, State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and usefullmprovernents in Soft- Metal Caps for Projectiles; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates more particularly to armor-piercing projectiles; and it consists in providing the nose or point of such projectiles with a soft-metal cap in such manner that the cap can be readily and easily applied and detached.
The invention further consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts and their combination, as will be hereinafter fully described in this specification and briefly stated in the claims thereof.
The principal object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the cost of the means by which this type of cap is attached to and detached from the projectile without in the least impairing its effectiveness as a fastener and bolder and without projectile.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aplan view of a projectile, showing our preferred means for attaching the soft-metal cap to the nose or point thereof, the cap being in section; Fig. 2, a plan view of the attaching means detached; Fig. 3, a rear plan view of the same; and Figs. 4 and 5 modified forms of attaching means.
Referring to the several views, the letter (0 indicates a projectile having a conoidallyshaped nose 6, 0 the soft-metal cap, and d the cap-fastener. The cap-fastener is composed of a copper band 6, from which project a plurality of spring-arms f, each arm being provided at its outer or free end with an outwardly-turned projection g, preferably in an oblique direction, said projection being designated a locking end. The spring-arms conform to the shape of and lie flat against the nose or point of the projectile, as shown in Fig. 1. The soft-metal cap is provided with injury to the point of the a recess [L in its rear end, corresponding in shape to the apex of the nose, so as to snugly fit the same. The inner wall of the recess h is provided with a groove 7;, in which the locking ends of the spring-arms are entered to lock the soft-metal cap to the projectile, the band 0 being fastened to said projectile in any well-known manner.
The exterior shape of the soft-metal cap is immaterial, as it may be of any desired shape, and the locking ends of the spring-arms may be bent other than in an oblique direction and still be adapted to detachably lock said cap to the nose or point of the projectile.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the attaching device is in the form of a hood 76, divided into a plurality of arms Z by means of slits m or made in one piece slit on one side. The rear or solid end of the hood may extend back to the copper band a and be secured thereto, or the rear end of the slitted hood may be bent inwardly to form a flange 0, adapted to engage an annular groove 9 in the projectile, as shown in Fig. 5. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an armor-piercing projectile, the combination with the nose or point thereof, of a soft-metal cap recessed to fit said nose or point, the inner wall of the recess being provided with an annular groove, and arms, attached to the projectile, having locking ends arranged to enter the annular groove to lock the cap to the nose of the projectile.-
2. In an armor-piercing projectile, the combination with the nose or point thereof, of a soft-metal cap having a conical recess,the inner wall of which is provided with an annular groove, and spring-arms secured to a band, said band being secured to the projectile and said arms being provided with locking ends arranged to engage the annular groove, and thereby fasten said cap to the nose of the projectile.
