To all whom it may concern.:
Beit known that I, HENRY B. N EWHALL, a
citizen of the United. States, residing at Plainiield, in the county of Union and State `of .5 New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansion Bolt- Anchors, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
' This invention relates to expansion bolt anchors and moreA particularly to such anchors as will not mar ordeface the support in which the anchoris mounted.

. In tlie illustrative embodiments of this invention shown in the drawings, 1 is a masonry or other support within .which an openin 2.has been `made for the reception of my olt anchor 3. This anchorl I make in two or more parts as 4 and 5, the body por tion 4 being preferably formed cylindrical and made of some suitable non-yielding or nonbendin metal, such, for instance, as cast or mallea le iron. In-V the back 6 of the body portion 4 I preferably form one or more pockets 7, four'being shownV in Fig. 2, though .it is to be understood'that a greater or less number would fall within my invention. The lower .portion 8 of these pockets is formed of greater diameter' than the throat 9 to receive lugs 10 preferably formed integral with the tines 'or expansible members 11 which are shown as segments.- In the form of the invention illustrated `in Figs. 1 to 5 I use four tines 11, their respective .lugs 10 ,'55 coperating each with the pocketsv 7 formed Specification of Letters Patent. These yield ing members 11 may be formed of soft metal, such as lead or composition and I preferably form the lugs 1G by casting them directly within the pockets in. the body portion 4, though they may be placed within the pocket 7 iii-any other suitable manner.
After the bolt anchor is inserted within the aperture 2 of the support I expand the tines or exp'ansible members 11 by screwing within them 'the expanding means 12. As shown in Fig.4 1, this is in the form of a screw having a Aplain portion 31 which merely` passes through the opening' 14 in the body portion 4, the thread 15 upon the end ofthe screw 12 coperating with the sides 16 of the tapering opening 17 cutting complementary screw threads in the tines or expansible members 11 and expanding them, as shown. in Fig. 1 so that the entire bolt anchor 3 and tthe screw 12 are securely held within the socket 2. This expanding action of the members 11 takesplace at a suitable distancefrom the face 18 of the support 1 and consequently the support is not marred or chipped, as there is practically no expanding orc'e exerted y upon the support 1 at that ioint, practically y the expansible machine screw threads 19 Within the hollow portion of the body fi,Y the body 4 in this orm of the invention acting as a nut for the screw. The other end -21 ofthe screw 13 is formed tapering, as shown `in Fig. 5, to coolperate with a tapering recess 22 formed by t e tines or expansible members 11. I may also in some instances form the body portion 4 of my bolt anchor with'an annular flange 3() which is adapted to limit the inward movement of a bolt anchor within the hole 2 by engaging with the surface 1S of the support 1. My invention is also adapted for bolt an chers formed of two parts, such as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8. W'ith the bolt anchor illustrated in Fig. 7'1 use an expansible means such as the screw 12 shown in Fig. 1; with the form shown in Fig. 8 I use an expansible means such as a screw 13 in Fig. 5. rIn this form of the invention where the body portion 4 is made in two parts, 23 and 24, there is, of course, a slight Itendency for the two members 23 and 24 to move away from each other, but this is so slight as to be inconsequential, and therefore a two-part bolt anchor, such as herein shown, formed of materials of different strength or resiliency will not mar or chip the face 18 of the support 1 when the ex ansible members 25 are made to grip the wa s of the opening 2. Though I have described'this expansible bolt as being formed of two metals of different strength or resiliency, it is to be distinctly understood that my bolt anchor is not limited to two diferent metals, for the body portion 4 or 23 may be of metal and the yielding members 11 and 25 of some non-metallic substance which would yield to pressure more readily than will the metal of which -the body portions are formed. Fur- -therrnore,` the entire bolt anchor may be made. of two or more non-metallic substances, one of such substances being adapted to b e relatively firm and the other or others being formed of material which would yield or bend more readily than the other material out of which the body portions would be made.
Having thus described this invention in connection with the illustrative embodiments thereof, to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, what is claimed as new and what is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
1. An expansion bolt anchor formed of two separate connected parts, one of the parts being formed of relatively hard met`al` and the other of relatively soft metal.
2. An expansion bolt anchor h ving a body portion of relatively hard metal,'one or more pockets-formed in one surface of said member, another orti'on of the bolt anchor formed of relatix'e y soft metal having con neeting means located within one or more pockets ot the relati'xely hard portion.
3. An expansion holt anchor having a substantially cylindrical body portion formed of relati.'ely hard metal, one or more tines or expansible members formed of relati''ely soft metal and means for connecting the tines to the body portion.
4. An expansion bolt anchor ha? ing a substantially hollow cylindrical body portion formed of relatively Ahard metal, screw threads formed in the interior of the'body portion, one or more tines or expansible members formed of relatiyely soft metal, means for securing said members to the body portion, expanding means haring screw threads to .cooperate with the screw threads inthe interior of the body portion and al wedge surface to cooperate with the expansible members or tines. to cause them to move axially.
5. An ex ansion bolt anchor formed of a plurality oi) connectedl parts of different materials, the material forming the face of the anchor being of greater resisting capacity than the other portion of the anchor. 6. An expansion bolt anchor formed of 'a plurality of' connected parts of diierent metals, the metal forming the face of the anchor being of greater resisting capacity than the metal of the other portionA of the anchor.
7. An expansion bolt anchor formed of two separate connected parts of different materiels, one of the parts having greater resisting capacity than the other part.
8. An expansion bolt anchor ha'` ing a substantially rigid. portion of iron and an e1.'- pansiblc portion formed of lead or one of its all ys.
9. An expansion bolt anchor formed ef two separate connected parts of different materials, one of the parts hazing greater resisting capacity than the other-part, said parts being arranged end to end.
