PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES DUNCAN A. MAGCUAIG, OF NEBRASKA CITY, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR TO THE FAULTLESS CASTER COMPANY, OF NEBRASKA CITY, NEBRASKA.
CASTER-RETAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1905.
I Appliaation filed December 31, 1904. Serial No. 239,191.
caster-retainers, and has for its object to provide a holder that will serve the double purpose of yieldingly retaining itself and the caster against displacement while in use and at the same time to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable retainer.
1n the accompanymg drawlngs, Flgure 1 1s a side elevation of my improved retainer with a caster in place. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my improved retainer and caster, showing the base-plate and washer. cut in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a partial perspective view of the frame of my improved retainer, the top plate left off. Fig. 4: is a face view of the top plate of the frame before it is bent into proper shape.
My invention is described as follows: The frame 1 of my improved retainer consists of a wire 2, bent to form the bottom horizontal parts 3, top cross parts 4, and vertical side parts 5 and 5. The retainer is constructed of wire and holding-plates, the wire having considerable resiliency, such resiliency as to hold the retainer in place after the same has been inserted in the leg of any kind of furniture or other articles where casters are desired.
Secured to the top cross parts 4: of the wire 2 is a top plate 6, the two ends 7 of which are turned downwardly and inwardly for loosely holding the upper cross parts 4. This top part 6 is also provided with a central perforation 6. The ends 7 of the said top plate 6 are so formed as to allow said cross parts 4 to be sprung inwardly. The distance between the upper ends of the vertical parts of the wire from one view is greater than the lower ends of said wire; but the distance between the upper ends of the vertical wires from another view is less than the lower ends of said wire. These two features are clearly shown in the perspective view, Fig. 3.
The bottom horizontal parts 3 are secured in two projections 8, which rise upwardly and inwardly from the face of a base-plate 9, having a central perforation 10. These two projections 8 of the base-plate 9 prevent the wire 2 of my improved retainer from slipping upwardly or outwardly. Thus we have a retainer with a double spring adapted to be sprung inwardly at its upper and lower parts, as desired.
The base-plate 9 has extending downwardly from its periphery a flange 10. Working immediately under the base-plate and against the lower edge of the flange thereof is a dished washer 11, the convex side of which is turned up. This washer has a central perforation, in which a pintle 12 is mounted. This pintle 12 is provided at its lower end with a bulb 13 or a flat shoulder, as may seem best, the upper part of said bulb resting and revolving against the lower face of the washer 11. The pintle is also riveted Where it projects through the plate 6 to secure all parts of the retainer.
Secured to the lower end of the pintle and against the lower end of the bulb or flat shoulder is a bifurcated horn 15, between which the caster-wheel 16 is journaled.
When my improved retainer is set in place in the usual opening in the bedstead or other leg, the resilient vertical sides 5 and 5 of the wire 2 will bear upon the wall of said opening and retain the retainer against displacement. I
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A caster-retainer, consisting of a baseplate 9, having in its center a perforation 10, and rising from its upper face, and near its periphery, projections 8, adapted to clamp a wire; a wire 2, bent so as to represent eight parts; two lower horizontal parts 3, two upper cross parts 4, two substantially vertical parts 5, and two substantially vertical parts 5, its lower horizontal parts 3, secured under the projections 8, and a top plate 6, having a central perforation 6', and two downwardly and inwardly turned ends 7 the upper cross parts 4L, of said wire, secured in said downwardly and inwardly turned ends, said projections 3, and ends 7, clasping said parts of said wire so as to allow them to spring inwardly, the substantially vertical parts of said wire being wider in one view at their top ends than at their bottom ends, and in another view wider at their bottom ends than at their top ends, thus allowing said wire to spring inwardly at the top as well as at the bottom,
substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. A caster-retainer, consisting of a baseplate 9, having in its center a perforation 10, and rising from its upper face, and near its periphery, projections 8, adapted to clamp a wire; a wire 2, bent so as to represent eight parts, two lower horizontal parts 3, two upper cross parts 4:, four substantially vertical side parts 5, and 5, its lower horizontal parts 3, secured under the projections 8; a top plate 6, having a central perforation 6, and two downwardly and inwardly turned ends 7, the upper cross-pieces 4c, of said wire,- secured in said downwardly and inwardly turned ends, said projections 3, and ends 7, clasping said parts of wire so as to allow-them to springinwardly, the substantially vertical side parts of said wire being wider in one view at their top ends than at their bottom ends, and in another view wider at their bottom ends than at their top ends, thus allowing said wire to spring inwardly at the top as well as at the bottom, forming a double spring, and a perforated dished washer 11, working under and against the flange 10, of the base-plate 9, and
