ELECTROIVIAGNETIC VALVE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo G. WATERMAN, a citizen of the United States. residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electromagnetic Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electromagnetic valves, and more particularly to waste-valves.
The present invention has for its object the provision of improved and novel means for opening and closing a waste-valve by the employment of a single eletromagnet-coil adapted on alternate electrical energizations to open and close the valve.
Further objects are to provide an electricall y-operated waste-valve of com pact, durable, and simple construction which will be reliable in its action.
The invention is designed more particularly for use in connection with lavatories and bath-tubs, but is not necessarily confined to such uses.
Having the foregoing objects in view, the invention embraces certain improvements set forth -fully hereinafter and embodied in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical elevation; Fig. 2, a section on linew x of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail of the cam-wheel and lower end of the valve-stem; Fig. 4, a vertical section of a modification; and Fig. 5, a vertical section taken on the opposite side of Fig. 4, certain parts being in full lines.
The lower portion of a bath-tub or lavatorybowl is shown at 1. to which is secured wastevalve seat 2, in turn coupled to waste-pipe 3. The waste-valve 4l has a guide 5 fixed to its stem 6, and at the lower end of the stem is a roller 7. Secured to the side of the wastepipe is an iron magnet-shell 8, in the upper part of which is a solenoid 9 and in the lower part a bearing-block l0. A suitably-packed bearing 11 is located on the side of the wastepipe within the shell 8. A shaft 12 is journaled to the waste-pipe at 13 and also journaled in the bearing 10 and 11 and carries a cam-wheel 1.4, on which the roller 7 is made to rest by the gravity of the waste-valve and the action of a spring 15, which tends to close the waste-valve. The cam-wheel has depressions 16 at the ends of its minor axis and depressions 17 at the ends of its major axis. 0n the other end of the shaft is a ratchet-wheel 18, having its teeth arranged in two pairs. lhisratchet-wheel is held against backward rotation by a dog 19. Projecting down into the opening in solenoid 9 is a guide-rod 20, fixed to the shell 8 and provided with a spline 21. Slidable within the solenoid is an armature 22, having a way 23, which receives the spline 21, and an opening 24, receiving the guide-rod 20. Iivoted to the lower end of the armature is a pawl 25, held in engagement with the ratchet-wheel by a coil-spring 26. A spring 27 tends to keep the armature down on the block 10.
Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, the solenoid 9 and its shell 8 are located directly on the waste-pipe, and the armature22 slides within the waste-pipe, the spring 15 beinginterposed between the guide 5, which is stationary, and the armature. The guide 5, fixed on the valvestern, is used, as before. The armature is limited in its downward movement by a-ridge 28 on the waste-pipe. The dog 19 is employed and also the pawl 25. The sides of the armature are cut away at 29 and 30 to accommodate the cam-wheel and the ratchet-wheel, the latter preventing the armature from turning in the waste-pipe.
In each form of the invention when a temporary current is sent through the solenoid 9.
the armature is drawn thereinto, and the pawl 25 turns the ratchet-'wheel 18 a quarter-revolution, which also turns through the medium of shaft12 the cam-wheel 14 a quarter-revolution, causing the roller 7 and stem 6 to be raised and the valve opened, the roller passing into the depression 17.' When the current ceases, the armature drops by gravity and by the action of spring 27. The valve remains open until a current is sent through the solenoid again, whereupon the operation is repeated, except that the roller passes into depression 16 and the valve closes. Alternate energizations of the solenoid open and close the valve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an electromagnetic valve, the combination with a reciprocating valve and valvestem, of a rotary cam-wheel having depressions 'arranged in alternation at varying distances from the center of rotation, said valve- 'stem cooperating with the cam-wheel, and an electromagnet for turning the cam-wheel.
2. In an electromagnetic valve, the combination of a reciprocating valve and valvestem, a spring adapted to close said valve, a cam-wheel having elevations and depressions IOO lIO
arranged in alternation, said valve-stem resting on the cam-wheel, a ratchet-wheel connected to the cam-wheel, an electromagnet, a Spring-pressed armature controlled by Said electromagnet, and a pawl controlled by the armature* and adapted for operating the ratchet-wheel,said electromagnet being adapted on alternate energizations to open and close the valve.
3. 1n an electromagnetic valve, the combination with a reciprocatable seat-valve, of a spring adapted to close said reciprocatable seat-valve, a cam-wheel having elevations and depressions cooperating with lthe reciprocatable seat-valve to alternately open and close said valve on alternate operations of the camwheel, a ratchet-wheel connected to the camwheel, a single solenoid, an armature slidable in the solenoid and under the control thereof, a spring having a tendency to project the armature from the solenoid, a pawl carried by the armature which is engageable with the ratchet-wheel on movement of the armature in one direction and adapted to ride idly on the ratchet-wheel on movement of the armature in the other direction, and means to prevent backward rotation of the cam-wheel, said several means cooperating to alternately open and close the valve on alternate energlzatlons of the solenoid.

5. In an electromagnetic valve, the combination with a reciprocatable seat-valve, of a solenoid, an armature slidable in the solenoid, a spring for projecting the armature,a ratchetwheel cooperatively connected to the reciprocatable seat-valve to open and close said seatvalve on alternate operations of the ratchetwheel, and a pawl carried by the armature and engageable with the ratchet-wheel on one movement of the armature and disengageable therefrom on the other movement of said armature, Whereby alternate energizations of the solenoid cause alternate opening and closing of the seat-valve.
