VALVE-CONTROLLING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,045, dated October 27, 1896. Application filed October 30, 1893. Serial No. 489,506. (No model.)
York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valve-Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus in which the valves of a cylinder are operated or controlled electrically, and to the construction of valves especially adapted for that purpose, which valves may, however, be operated, if desired, otherwise than electrically.
In the drawings like letters refer to like parts.
Figure 1 is a sectionalview of apparatus embodying my invention; and Fig. 2, an elevation of the electromagnets, showing also the auxiliary valves, one of which is shown. in section.
A is a cylinder having a pistonrod a. and ports or valve connections a and a and a and a, a and a leading through a channel into one end of the cylinder and a and a into the other end thereof.
B is a valve-chest annexed to the cylinder The valvestem 1) oscillates in the valve-chest B and is provided with two heads 12 and 17 which are arranged to open the ports leading to one end of the cylinder A to admit the pressure thereto, and at the same time to close the ports to the other end of the cylinder to exclude the same pressure, but opening the latter to permit a vent from that end of the cylinder. The spiral springs b and I) lie between the heads of the valve-chest and the heads of the valve-stem and are of equal tension.

The ports a. and a are thereby opened to the pressure and the ports a and a are closed to it, the ports a and a being, however, opened to the vent y. Thus pressure is admitted into the cylinder A to move the piston-rod a in the direction indicated by arrow 2. Making the circuit through the other of said electromagnets operates in the same way to move the other valve of the cylinder 0 and to move the heads 6 and b in the reverse direction of that last described, thus opening and closing the ports of the cylinder A to move its piston-rod in the reverse direction.

Fig. 1, thus equalizing the pressure in the cylinder and holding the piston-rod stationary. In operating my device any liquid or fluid under pressure may be employed, such as steam, water, and air.
The advantage of using steam or its equivalent in the cylinder 0 is, first, that it is very rapid in its operation, and, second, that when the steam or air is cutoff the same condenses or escapes through the ports 0" or c leaving the apparatus free to be operated by hand with the lever E.
This device is particularly useful for the reason that it may be applied to the valve of any engine without interfering With or altering the existing machinery, and leaving the same capable of being controlled either electrically or by hand at will.
\Vhat I claim is- In a valve-controlling device, the valve consisting of a valve-chest having inlet and outlet ports and a valve-stem having two heads to control said ports and two springs bearing with equal tension upon the valvestem heads, in combination with a motor to opcrate said valves, consisting of a cylinder havin g operative valves and piston-rod and electromagnets in circuit having armature secured to the valve-stems of said motor and means to control the circuit.
