DEVICE FOR OPENING ENVELOPS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed June 1, 1905. Serial No. 263,349.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUGO BRISACHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening Envelops, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertain's to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for opening envelope; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be conveniently carried in a pocket or laid on a desk or table convenient for use.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom panying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in whicl Figure l is a side view of my improved envelop-opening device; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing the method of operating the device, and Fig. 4 a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class specified which comprises an oblong block a, having a longitudinal groove a in the bottom thereof, one end of which is deepened slightly, as shown at a, and this deepening of said groove at one end in the construction shown forms a shoulder a in said groove near said end.
In the groove a and in the deepened portion (1 thereof is secured a pointed blade 6, having a shank b at right angles thereto, which is secured in the back of the block a in any desired manner, and the point of the blade 6 projects longitudinally along the groove a and slightly past the shoulder a in the form of construction, and in this form of construction the block a is provided at the end thereof opposite the deepened portion of the groove a and on the bottom side thereof with an ex: tension and the groove a extends therethrough.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the method of operating this device in opening an envelop, a
part of an envelop being shown in dotted lines at 0, and in the operation of opening an envelop one of the side edges thereof is inserted into the groove of and the block a is moved to the right, asindicated by the arrow as, and in this operation the point of the blade b passes under the sealing-flap of the envelop and separates said flap from the body of the envelop, as will be readily understood, or instead of moving theblock a to the right the envelop may be moved in the opposite direction, and the result will be the same, and in either event the edge of the envelop rests on or in the bottom of the groove a while the point of the blade?) projects into the main longitudinal portion of said groove, the line of the bottom of which, extended in the direction of the blade, would strike said edge or would bisect said edge.
This device is simple in construction'and operation and comparatively inexpensive and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and said device may be made of any desired material, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for opening envelops comprising an oblong block having a longitudinal groove in the bottom thereof which is deeper at one end than at the other, a tapered blade secured in the deepened end of said groove and the point of which projects longitudinally into the main part of said groove, the arrangement of the blade and groove being such that the bottom of the groove extended would bisect the edge of the blade, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 31st day of May, 1905.
HUGO BRISACHER.
