Be it known that I, PARKE S. Pornnnx'rnaa citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Grate-Baskets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fireplace-baskets, and more partieulariyto the supporting means therefor.

An object of this invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the supporting-hooks are so constructed that they may be easily adjusted in order to be applied to the srmporting-lugs of the fireplace-walls or mantel. In general practice it is necessary to place the supporting-lugs in a certain position with relation to the hooks of a basket or to obtain abasket with the hooks positioned with relation to the lugs. It may be that the position of the hooks with relation to the lugs is not exactly correct and the basket will hang loose and be liable to displacement. To overcome this objection is the object of the invention. By this invention certain of the hooks are adjustable with relation to the remainder in order that the hooks may be caused to positively engage the lugs without any previous consideration of the position of the supporting-lugs with respect to the hooks.

Finally, an object of this invention is to produce a device of the character described which will prove satisfactory in use and comparatively inexpensive to produce and maintain.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which Figure l is a front elevation of the invention, the same being shown applied. Fig. 2 is a broken view in perspective of the basket attached, the view being taken on the inside of the basket. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of different parts of the invention.

In the drawings, 1 indicates the side walls of the fireplace, and 2 3 the supporting-lugs carried thereby on either side. These lugs are suitably spaced apart and are in vertical alinement.

i denotes the grate-basket, which is of any ordinary or preferred construction. At each upper corner of the basket is a hook 5, adapted to engage the lugs 2 of the fireplace-walls. The end bars 6 of the basket are provided with vertical slots 7, which are positioned beneath the books 5, and in each of the slots a hook 8 rides, which is adapted to engage a lug 3 of the tireplacewall. This hook 8 is provided in one of its sides with a groove or transverse recess 9, which embraces the end por tion 10 of the basket, or that portion between the slot and the edge of the basket. This portion 10 on the exterior is depressed with relation to the remainder of the basket, so that the head of the hook 8 is approximately flush therewith and comparatively.free from accidental contact which would tend to release it from its supporting-lug. The interior of the edge portion 10 is provided its entire length with the teeth 11, which are engaged by the opposing wall of the recess 9, whereby the book 8 is held in diiferent adjustments or positions. In order to insureapositive engagement, the upper portion of the opposing wall is slightly curved to form the contact 12. The width of the recess 9 being slightly greater than the diameter of the portion 10 allows the weightof the basket to give a slight movement to the hook 8, which movement causes the contact 12 to engage one of the teeth 11. To further hold the hook 8 against downward movement, wire 8 or other material may be wrapped around the portion 10 just beneath the hook. Of course it is to be understood that although wire has been found the most convenient anyother means may be employed that will answer the purpose. In order that the hook 8 may be applied within the slot, the lower endof said slotis enlarged, as at 14, sufficiently to allow the said hook to pass therethrough.

In practice the hooks 5 engage the lugs 2, and the books 8 are adjusted to engage the lugs 3.

The construction, operation, and advantages will, it is thought, be fully understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that various changes may be resorted to in the proportions and details of construction for successfully carrying the invention into practice without departing from the scope thereof.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, a grate-basket, provided at its ends with supporting-hooks formed integral therewith and with vertical slots, one side of each of said slots being provided with a series of teeth, hooks mounted to slide in said slots, each of said hooks having a groove engaging one side of the corresponding slot, one wall of said groove being curved to form means for engaging said teeth and the diameter-of the groove being greater than the thickness of the side of the slot engaged thereby.

2. In a device of the character described, a grate-basket, provided at its ends with supporting-hooks formed integral therewith and with vertical slots, one side of each of said slots being provided with a series of teeth, hooks mounted to slide in said slots, each of said hooks having a groove engaging one side of the corresponding slot, one wall of said groove being curved to form means for engaging said teeth, the diameter of the groove being greater than the thickness of the side of the slotengaged thereby and means beneath the hooks for holding them against downward movement.
