SEALING-CAP FOR VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JAMES MILNORHICKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit, Union county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealiug-Caps for Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sealing-caps for vessels; and it consists in certain conformation of the top surface of the cap.
In order that persons skilled in the art may understand, construct, and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the cap placed on a bottle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan or top View of the cap as shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a View of the cap shown in Fig. 3 reversed or upside down,showing the under side of the cap.
A is the body of a bottle.
B is a bead on the top of the neck of the bottle near its mouth.
C is the extreme top surface of the cap raised above the upper plane of the cap ashort distance and of a diameter internally about equal to the size of the bore of the bottle near its mouth to receive the upper part of a stopper and hold it central of the cap.
0 is an annular surface at the top of the cap surrounding the raised portion C to rest upon the walls of the mouth of bottle.
D is the vertical wall of the recess or raised portion C where it joins the annular portion C.
E is a flange pendent from the outer diameter of the portion C to fit over the bead B when on the bottle. It is here shown as pressed over said head B and. held in place by the spring or elasticity of the metal; but my invention is not confined to this mode of securing the cap on a vessel.
F is a stopper of compressible material secured in the recess in the cap beneath the portion C.
G is a shoulder at the top of the bore of the bottle, and the lower end of the stopper rests on this shoulder when the cap and stopper are on the bottle.
G is the bore of the bottle below the shoulder G.
The stopper in sealing the bottle is compressed between the surface C of the cap and the shoulder G and the sides of the stop per forced more or less into the circumferential space between the part C of the cap and the upper surface of the top of the walls of the bottle. Also the pressure from the gases from the interior of the bottle when the bottle is charged under pressure forces the sides of the stopper still more into said circumferential space, thus tightly sealing the bottle.
Having now fully described my invention and the manner in which I have embodied it, what Iclaim as new and as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sealing-cap for vessels the cap having a top surface and a continuous circumferential flange pendent from theouter diameter of said top surface, said circumferential flange being constructed to lock it to the vessel and a raised portion in the center of said top surface for the purpose of holding a sealing material substantially as specified.
