Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed January 10, 1905. Serial No. 2405M.
T0 ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. VAN LooN, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Coxsackie, in the county of Greene, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scraper Holders or Locking-Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders or locking device attachments for ice, snow, or other scrapers and is for the purpose of retaining the scraper-blade in the desired position and restraining it from premature dumping and also to greatly lessen the labor of operation, as without this device the blade has to be held in position by hand and requires an extra man for this purpose.
My invention consists of an attachment formed of several parts hereinafter more fully described and that may be readily attached to any of the usual forms of scrapers now in use and which I show in the accompanying drawings as attached to the form of scraper most in use.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a snow-scraper, showing the invention attached. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view and shows the construction of parts and the operation of the same, the dotted outline illustrating the position of parts when the load is released.
Similar figures designate corresponding parts in both drawings.
The connecting-bar 1, of wood or metal, is attached at or near its forward end to the cross-bar 4 of the scraper by the lugs 2 and the bolt 3, which holds said connecting-bar securely, but allows of its having a rocking motion on the bolt 3 as a pivot. The rear or other end of the connecting-bar is pierced at desired intervals on its sides near the end by metal pins or studs 7, which form a rack which is designed to engage the two sides of the slotted or forked-shaped member 5 between any two of the pins 7. The slotted or forked-shaped member 5 is securely attached by bolts or other means to the scraper-blade 6, said blade being pivoted at its ends to the sides of the scraper in the usual way for the purpose of dumping the load. The slotted member 5 being at an angle the same as the blade 6 when in use, the great weight of the load being below the center of the pivot, the tendency is to force the lower part of the blade backward and the upper part forward, which in turn will force the end of the connectingbar 1 upward out of the slot 8, as the pin 7 cannot pass through the slot, but must slide up the inclined face of the member 5.
To hold the connecting-bar 1 in the slot 8 until such time as it is desired to dump the load, a locking device is provided consisting of the bolt 9, formed with an eye 10 on one end and sliding in the holes 11 through the tops of the sides of the slot 8.just above the top of said connecting-bar when in place. Thus the connecting-bar will be held in a locked position. For the quick releasing of the bolt 9 is provided a curved rod or handlever 12, pivoted at its lower end to the blade 6 by the bolt 13 and passing upward through the eye 10. By moving this lever to the left or right, as the case may be, the locking-bolt 9 will be pulled out to its full extent, allowing the connecting-bar 1 to slide out of the slot 8 and the blade be dumped, or the lever may be pushed in the opposite direction and the locking-bolt 9 be forced in over the connecting-bar 1, thus holding it in place. A stop is provided against which the lever 12 rests in the opening position, so that the locking-bolt 9 will not be pulled clear of both holes.
The operation as a whole is as follows: The connecting-bar 1 is dropped in the slotted member 5 between any two adjacent pins? that will give the blade 6 the desired angle. The hand-lever 12 is then thrown over, pushing the locking-bolt 9 into place over the connecting-rod 1 as it lies in the slot 8. When it is desired to dump the load, the hand-lever 12 is thrown the opposite way, pulling the locking-bolt 9 out and releasing the connectingbar 1, which slides up the face of the member 5 and allows the blade 6 to turn over forward, dumping the load. This operation is repeated for each act of dumping.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. In a locking or holding device for scrapers, the combination, of a pivoted scrapcrblade, a forked member attached to such blade: a connecting-bar having stops or pins: a bolt in the forked member for coupling the connectingbar with said forked member, and thereby locking the scraper in position, for the purpose set forth and substantially as described.
2. In a locking or holding device for scrapers, the combination, of a pivoted scraper-blade, a forked member attached to such blade: a connecting-bar having stops or pins: a bolt in the .forked fnember for coupling the connectingbar with said forked member, and a hand- 1 State of New York, this 5th day of January, lever, hinged at one end to said scraper-blade 1905. and passing through an eye in said locking- JOHN M VAN LOON bolt, for operating said locking-bolt, all for 5 the purpose set forth, and substantially as Witnesses:
