Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24:, 1905.
Application filed March 10, 1905. Serial No. 249,452.
To aZZ whom, it may concern.
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD WRIGHT, of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Puzzles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention consists of a device comprising a series of hidden ways or channels leading from any given point in the device to a receptacle and along which an object is caused to travel and means adapted to inclicate when such object enters the receptacle. For full comprehension, however. of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view with the top removed, and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view.
The preferred embodiment of my invention depicts a forth and a river 0, running through the surrounding country (Z. A sealed flat and preferably oblong box a has its interior divided by partitions f into a series of tortuous hidden ways or channels 1, representing trenches leading from a port it in the top of the box, near one end thereoflto a receptaclei beneath the representation of the fort, the top whereof is cut away, as at 7', while a ball 7; is caused to roll along the tortuous trenches, and such receptacle is preferably provided with means whereby the entrance of the ball into the receptacle is indicated. This last-mentioned means preferably consists of an angular device pivoted between its ends, as at m, in the opening j and having its lower end in the form of agate a, constructed to extend across and yieldingly obstruct the entrance to the receptacle v1, and its upper portion in the form of a flag 0-say, for instance, that representing the attacking armythe normal position of this device being with the flag lying on a level with the cover when the gate extends across the entrance to the receptacle.
To manipulate my improved puzzle, the ball 7;, which represents the attacking army, is inserted into the trenches through opening it, and by tilting the box to different angular positions such ball will, if the box happens to be tilted correctly, be caused to roll along the trenches into the fort, which will result in the flag of the attacking army being raised.
If desired, the trenches can be differently arranged or a different indicating device used or the box decorated to depict other scenes without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is as follows:
1. A device containing a series of hidden ways or channels, an object adapted to travel along such hidden ways or channels, means whereby such object is inserted into one end thereof, and normally hidden means adapted to be acted upon by the object upon the arrival thereof at the opposite end of the ways or channels for the purpose of indicating such arrival.
2. A fiat box, aseries of partitions dividing the interior thereof into a hidden tortuous way or channel, such box having a receptacle communicating with one end of the tortuous way or channel and an opening in the box whereby an object adapted to travel along such tortuous way or channel is inserted thereinto, the receptacle being adapted to receive and contain the object, and movable means adapted to be acted upon by the object for indicating the arrival of the object in the said receptacle. Y
3. A flat box; a series of partitions dividing the interior thereof into a plurality of intercommunicatingtortuous hidden ways or channels; such box having a receptacle communieating with one end of one of the tortuous ways or channels, and an opening communicating with the receptacle. and a device pivoted in the last-mentioned opening and having one end in the form of a gate and its other end adapted to project above the top of the box.
4:. A flat box, a series of partitions dividing the interior thereof into a plurality of intercommunicating tortuous ways or channels, such box having a receptacle communicating with one end of one of the tortuous ways or channels and an opening whereby an object adapted to travel along such tortuous ways or channels is inserted thereinto, and normally hidden means adapted to be acted upon and exposed by the object whereby the entry of the object into the receptacle is indicated.
5. A flat box; a series of partitions dividing the interior thereof into a plurality of intercommunicating tortuous ways or channels; such box having a receptacle communicating With one end of one of the tortuous Ways or channels, and an opening communicating with the receptacle, and a device pivoted in the lastmentioned opening and having one end in the form of a gate and its other end adapted to be projected above the top of the box whereby the entry of the object into the receptacle is I indicated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.

WILLIAM P. MoFEAT, FRED. J. SEARs.
