To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Crmnnns H. SumnsoN, a citizen of the United States. residing at lVest Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fraud Preventers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to fraud pre venters; adapted to be used upon check con trolled devices; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple means for passing a check from an inlet opening in the casing of a check operated device to an opening through which the check may pass into the device.
With the above object in view the fraud preventer comprises a shelf mounted in the casing of a check controlled device below the top of the casing. This shelf is provided with two openings and a pin is adjustably mounted upon the shelf. A block is slidably mounted between the shelf and the top of the casing, and is provided with a vertical opening adapted to be brought into register with the opening in the top of the casing and also adapted to move over the openings in the shelf when the block is moved longitudinally. A lever is fulcrulned in the block and is provided with a weighted end having a cam surface adapted to engage the pin when the block is moved along the shelf. The said lever is also provided with a finger which normally projects into the opening in the block.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and then particularly pointed out in the claim and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the fraud preventer showing the parts in position to receive a check. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in position just after the check has been passed to the check controlled device. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view out on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view out on the line 4-t of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters. As illustrated in the accompanying drawmg, a casing 1 contains a check controlled device indicated in general at 2, the said de- V100 being provided with a pocket 3 adapted to receive a check. The casing 1 is provided in its top with an opening 4:. A shelf 5 extends transversely across the casing 1 in the vicinity of the top thereof but spaced therefrom. The said shelf is disposed parallel with the top of the casing. The shelf 5 is provided with an opening (3 of a size just sufiicient to receive edgewise a check of predetermined dimensions. This opening 6 is located vertically above the pocket 3 and flanges 7 surround the opening (3 and depend from the shelf 5 and are disposed toward the pocket 3. The shelf 5 is further provided with a relatively large opening 8 which is located adjacent the opening 6. The opening 8 is partially under the openign 41, butnot in direct alinemcnt therewith. The opening 6 is located under a solid or closed portion of the top of the casing 1. A block 9 is slidably mounted between the shelf 5 and the top of the casing 1. This block is of such transverse dimensions as to fit snugly between the sides of the casing and between the top thereof and the shelf 5, although the said block may slide freely between the said parts. A rod 10 passes through one side edge of the casing 1 and is fixed at its inner end to the end of the block 9. The block 9 is provided with a vertically disposed opening 11 which is approximately of the same transverse area as the openings l. and 6. The block 9 is provided at its under side with a cavity 12 in which is fulcrumed a lever 13. This lever is provided with a weighted end 1 1 which in turn is providedwith a cam surface 15. The lever 12 is further provided with a finger 16 which normally projects into the opening 11 of the said block. A pin 17 is adj ustably mounted for vertical movement upon the shelf 5 and is located in the path of movement of the cam surface 15 and a shoulder 18 with which the said lever is provided. The shoulder 18 is located at one side of the pin 17 and the weighted end 1 1 of the lever is disposed at. the opposite side of the said pin. In Fig. 1 the parts are shown in their nonmal positions wherein the opening 11 is directly below and in alinement with the opening 4 in the top of the casing and the weighted end 14 of the lever 13 is resting upon the upper surface of the shelf 5. Also th finger 16 is projecting into the opening 11. Presuming now that the check of prescribed dimensions is passed into the opening 11 through the opening 4:, the said check will lodge upon the end of the finger 16. Then as the rod 10 is moved in an inward direction with relation to the casing 1 the block 9 is slid along the shelf 5 so that the cam surface 15 of the weighted end 14 of the lever 13 encounters the upper end of the pin 17. As the block 9 arrives at the end of its movement the lever 13 is swung by the pin 17 so that the finger 16 is withdrawn from under the check and the check may gravitate through the opening 6 and between the flanges 7, and lodge in the pocket 3. This is sufiicient to permit the check controlled device 2 to be operated. After the said device has completed its operation the check is dislodged from the pocket 3 by any suitable means which does not constitute a feature of this invention. When the rod 10 is pulled in an outward direction with relation to the casing l the block 9 is moved from over the opening 6 in the shelf 5 and when the shoulder 18 of the lever 13 encounters the side of the pin 17 the finger 16 of the said lever is positively projected into the opening 11 of the said block. At the same time the weighted end 14: of the lever falls and rests upon the upper surface of the shelf 5. Thus the parts are returned to their normal positions. Presuming now that a check of less than the prescribed dimensions is inserted in the opening 11, the finger 16 will not support the said check: at the same height in the block as a check of predetermined dimensions would be held, and consequently very slight movement on the part of the finger 16 would permit such a check to be released. Therefore a small check is released when the cam surface 15 initially engages the pin 17 and before the opening 11 arrives directly over the opening 6. This smaller check then falls down through the opening 8 in the shelf 5 and does not lodge in the pocket 3 of the check controlled device. Should the check be so small as not to lodge against the finger 16 it will fall directly through the openings 11 and 8, after the block is moved slightly to uncover enough of the opening 8 to permit the said check to pass through.
The advantage gained by having the pin 17 vertically adjustable, is that the said pin may be lengthened or shortened vertically to compensate for any wear that might occur at the beveled surface 15 of the weighted end 14 of the lever 13 and also to advance or retard the withdrawal of the finger 16 from the opening 11 with relation to the sliding movement of the block.
It will therefore be seen that a simple and an effective device is provided for passing a check from the admission opening of a casing to the check pocket of a check operated device, and that the parts of the passing mechanism are so arranged that any checks of dimensions less than those of a check of prescribed size are passed into the casing of the coin-operated device without lodging upon or coming in contact with the check pocket of the said device.

The combination with an approximately horizontal tray provided with a plurality of check receiving openings, of a hollow block slidably mounted upon the tray and provided wit-h a check receiving opening-'- to be alternately moved into registration with said check receiving openings, a vertically swinging lever arranged within the hollow block and pivoted at one of its ends thereto near and to one side of the coin receiving opening of the block, said lover being provided adjacent its pivoted end with a depending shoulder carrying a laterally extending finger normally extending into the check receiving opening of the block to support a check therein, said pivoted lever being further provided near its opposite end and at its lower longitudinal edge with an inclined cam face, and a pin attached to the tray and arranged between the depending shoulder and calm face and alternately engaging with them upon the movement of the block in opposite directions, to positively swing the lever in opposite directions whereby the laterally extending finger is positively moved into and out of the check receiving opening of the block.
