Be it known that 1, Louis S'r. J. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Telephone-Transmitters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention appertains to attachments for telephone-transmitters, the object being to provide an indicating means which is applicable tothe casing of a telephone-transmitter, the construction thereof being such that it may be applied and detached without in any way defacing or altering the casing and when applied will not obscure the license-number of the transmitter.
This invention is designed primarily for use upon portable telephones, known as deskstands, and provides the mouthpiece-carrying frame of the transmitter-casing with a card, label carrier or support, which is held over the face-plate of a transmitter by means which engage the casing, so that the instructive, directive, or other matter on the card, label carrier or support will be in direct line of vision of the person using the transmitter. In practice the card or label will have printed or otherwise inscribed thereon directions for use or other matter, a space being left for the subscribers or exchange number, and the card, label carrier or support is shaped so as not to obscure the license-number of the instrument, the same being maintained parallel to the face-plate of the casing and surrounds the voice-opening and mouthpiece thereof. The indicating or directive card or label is protected by a transparent or diaphanous covering carried by the same support as the card or label, and the card or label carrier has marginal means for connecting the same to the casing rear of the mouthpiece-carrying frame.
The invention consists of an indicating attachment or label-carrier for transmitters and embodies in its construction a supporting member or carrier having an Opening which surrounds the voice-opening or mouthpiece of the transmitter and means for attaching the label carrier or support to the casing of the transmitter, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate several embodiments of my invention, Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and side elevations showing the application of one form of the invention to atransmitter. Fig.
3 is a front elevation of the same construction as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the attachment being shown detached from the transmitter. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4: 4. Figs. 5, 7 and 9 are front elevations of modified forms of the invention, and
Figs. 6, 8, and 10 are vertical sections.
The transmitter is of the standard type, the mouthpiece'carrying frame being attached to a cup-shaped casing A by screws a a. The rear edge of the rim of the mouthpiece-carrying frame has a projecting edge or bead, and the aperture or voice-opening through the center of the face-plate of the diaphragm-casing is surrounded by a raised bead to afford a thicker support for the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece either frictionally engages the voice-opening through a face-plate of the transmitter or is screwed therein, either construction providing for the removal of the mouthpiece. The faceplate of each transmitter is provided below the mouthpiece with numbers, known as the license-number, the figures thereof being usually stamped into a metal plate which is securely attached to the face-plate. The license number being frequently referred to should not be obscured, and the plate a, in which the license-number is stamped, projects beyond the surface of the face-plate.
A metallic frame, support, or label-carrier B is constructed to present a rim which closely embraces the rim or edge of the mouthpiececarrying frame of the transmitter. The part B has an inward-extending flange 7), and when made as illustrated by Fig. 3 there are present bars o which maintain centrally with respect to the rim an annular frame, the inner margin 5 thereof being raised or struck up to extend slightly above the plane ofthe flange 7), and thus overlie the raised portion which surrounds the voice opening in the mouthpiece-supporting frame. The outer margin of this ring or annular frame is on the same plane as the flange l). The lower portion of the frame or member B presents a segmental part C, and through said part is an opening c, which corresponds as to shape with the license-number plate a, which is usually riveted to the face-plate of the transmitter below the voice-opening. The rim of the member B at its rear is bent slightly inward to engage and lie over the bead on the rear edge of the face-plate, and at points corresponding to the position of the screws ([6 a there are tongues or lugs b with openings therethrough, so that the screws which hold the parts of the casing together will hold the member or frame 13' thereon.
The frame or member B is preferably made up from a single piece, as shown, and while serving its purpose as a card-holder or labelcarrier does not in any way detract from the appearance of the instrument to which it is applied.
A card or label D is held in place by the part B, and such card has usually printed thereon the name of the company, instructions to the subscriber, or such subject-matter as may be desired, and on each card or label there is a space for the subscribers numher or other characters. The card D has preferably a straight lower edge which in use will rest upon the upper edge of the license-number plate a, and said card has also a central opening which is overlaid by the outer rim: of the annular frame which surrounds the mouthpiece. The outer perimeter of the card is covered by the flange b and the upper portion of the segmental part C of the frame B.
E refers to a cover of transparent or diaphanous material, as celluloid or collodion paper, and this may be shaped to correspond with the card used. In practice I prefer to have the card D and the protective covering of the same shape, so that they may be cut by the same dies.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings theframe or member B has a segmental portion 0 integral therewith, the same as in Fig. 3; but in this instance the central ring is separate from the frame and is held in place over the protective transparent covering by frictional engagement with the mouthpiece, this construction being used when the mouthpiece has a flange or is shaped so that it will overlie the inner raised portion of the ring which overlies the raised portion on the face-plate about the voice-opening to cover the inner edges of the card and covering.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a further modification in which an annular frame B is used, an annular card and transparent covering being used with such frame, also an inner detached ring. \Vith such a frame the rear edge may be provided with lugs 5 and the rim in addition to being turned or bent inward to overlie the bead on the rear edge of the face-plate may be slitted to give resiliency or allow for a greater expansion of the edge of the frame and for a variation as to the diameter of the bead on the rear edge of the face-plate of the transmitter. in the construction shown in Fig. 7 the card will have an opening to surround the license-number plate when it projects, or through which the number may be seen when stamped into the face-plate of the transmitter, and the covering may have a corresponding opening'or'not, according to the height of the license-number 1 plate or whether the numbers are impressed in the face-plate.
In Figs. 9 and 10 the frame or supporting member consists of a plate or cap with suitable connecting means for attaching to the casing of the transmitter. A central opening and a sight-opening c are formed in the plate. Above the opening through which passes the mouthpiece there may be slits, and between said slits the body portion may be depressed, such construction providing means for holding in place a slip or label which will carry particular information, as the subscribers or exchange number of the telephone. In Figs. 9 and 10 of the drawings the face or inwardprojecting portion of the frame is slitted, as shown at ffff, and the part between the slits is pressed slightly below the face of the frame to receive a slip or card which may be covered by a transparent substance, as mica or celluloid-paper. The general instructions or other data Whichit is desired to have on the plate may be printed or otherwise applied to the face of the plate 6*, which can then-be lacquered or varnished, the lacquer or varnish constituting in this instance theprotective covering for the printed matter.
The several forms of the invention herein described can be cheaply manufactured by stamping or spinning from sheet metal and by simply removing the mouthpiece of the transmitter can be quickly applied. The device does not mar the appearance of the transmitter or obscure the license-number thereof. Further, the subscribers number and other matteron the attachment is directly before the person using the transmitter.
The inturned rim of the label-carrier engaging the rear edge of the front part of the casing will hold the label-carrier in engagement with the face-plate of the diaphragmcasing, so-that it will not be disturbed when the screws are removed to have access to the interiorof the casing. Therefore theinturned rim is useful with the apertured lug.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Incombinationwith a telephone-transmitter, a card having indicating matter thereon and provided centrally with an opening, a frame constructed to partially cover the card and hold the same over the face-plate of the transmitter, means for attaching the frame to the transmitter, and a mouthpiece for the transmitter which passes through the opening in thecard.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a telephone-transmitter and its mouthpiece, of a card-holding frame having an opening through which is passed a portion of the mouthpiece of the transmitter, the frame being transversely of a larger area than the area of the face-plate of the transmitter.
3. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a telephone-transmitter and its mouthpiece, of a card or label having an opening therethrough, a metallic frame having a central opening for the passage of the mouthpiece of the transmitter, said frame being constructed to overlie a part of the card or label and to engage rearward of the card or label the casing of the transmitter.
l. As a new article of manufacture a card or label carrier for the casing of telephonetransmitters, consisting of a support having an opening adapted to receive the mouthpiece of the transmitter and an opening which is adapted to register with the license-number of the transmitter, and means for attaching said support to the casing of the transmitter.
5. An attachment for the casing of a telephone-transmitter comprising a card or label supporting frame having an opening adapted for the passage of the mouthpiece of the transmitter, so that the mouthpiece will engage the frame about said opening, and a card or label held by the frame in front of the face of the transmitter-casing.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a labelcarrier for the casing of a telephone-transmitter comprising an encircling member adapted to overlie the perimeter of that part of the transmitter-easing which carries the mouthpiece and with an inward-projecting portion which is adapted to overlie a part of the front of the casing.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a cardholder for the casing of a telephone-transmitter comprising a retainingrim, an inwardprojecting flange at an angle therewith, and a part of greater width than the flange said part having an opening therethrough.
8. In combination with the casing of a telephone-transmitter and its removable mouthpiece, a card-holding frame engaging the easing of the transmitter and overlying the face portion thereof, a card or label having a central opening through which is passed the mouthpiece of the transmitter, and a transparent cover overlying the card and through which is likewise passed the mouthpiece of the transmitter.
9. In combination with the casing of a'tele phone-transmitter which is provided with a part which projects beyond the plane of the face-plate, a card-supporting frame comprising a rim with an inward-extending flange and a part which is wider than the major portion of the flange such wider part of the rim having an opening therethrough of the same configuration as the projecting part of the face-plate, and a centrally-apertured card or label the perimeter of the card or label being overlaid by the rim and a part of the inwardextending flange.
10. In combination with the casing of a telephone-transmitter, a card or label carrier therefor having a rim which overlies the rim of the front part of the casing, apertured lugs which project from the rim of the carrier and register with screw-receiving openings in the casing, whereby the same screws that connect the parts of the casing also attach the card or label carrier to said casing.
11. In combination with, the casing of a telepholie-transmitter the face-plate thereof having a centrallypositioned aperture, a mouthpiece which enters the aperture and is held in detachable engagement with the face-plate, and a numbenplate which projects beyond the face-plate, a label-carrier having an opening therethrough for the passage of the mouthpiece of the transmitter, a rim which overlies the rim of the faceplate ofthe transi'nitter, apertured holdingtongues which extend beyond the rear edge of the label-carrier, an opening through the face of the label-carrier which registers with the number-plate and a protective covering for the label.
12. An attachment for the casing of a telephone-transmitter, consisting of a metallic frame having an inward-extending flange and a rim at an angle therewith for engagement with the perimeter of the 1nouthpiecaearrying frame of the transmitter, a label having an opening through the approximate center thereof, and a superimposed transparent covering for the label.
13. The combination of a telephonetrans mitter, its mouthpiece and a card having printed matter thereon; the card conforming to the shape of and fitting against the dia phragm-casing of the transmitter and a eardretaining frame attached to the transmitter.
14. The combination with a telephonetransmitter, of a card fitting against the face of the diaplnagm-casing of the transmitter, and a frame for the card which is so construe ted as to be held in place by the removable mouthpiece of the transmitter and means attaehed to the frame which engage the casing for the transmitter rear of its face.
15. The combination with a telephonetransmitter and its removable mouthpiece, of a card -holding frame having a central opening through which the mouthpiece of the transmitter is passed for the purpose of maintaining the frame and card in front of the face-plate of the transmitter.
16. The combination. with a telephone transmitter, of an attachment therefor comprising a frame having a central opening through which a portion of the mouthpiece of the telephone is passed, a card maintained by the frame in front of the face of the telephone-transmitter, the frame engaging the face of the card adjacent to the inner and outer edges of the card.
17. In a number and name plate for telephones and other similar purposes and. in combination with the instrument proper, a front plate having openings therein, one of such openings aranged to expose to view therethrough the manufacturefis number for such instrument, a plate carrying a subscribers number thereon arranged to be exposed to View through a second opening in such front plate and located against the instrument proper, and in front of such plate carrying such subscribers number a transparent shield, such shield and number-plate arranged to be clamped between the instrument and such front plate.
18. 19. In combination with a telephonetransmitter and its mouthpiece, a frame 1 through which the mouthpiece is passed and l a card having indicating matter thereon said card being maintained by the frame about the mouthpiece and in front of the face-plate of the transmitter.
