Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed be 25, 1904. Serial No. 234,221.
To all 1071 0712. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM RosnNBnRenR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Labeling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device to facilitate the laying of labels on bottles or boxes.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a rectangular platform or board composed of a number of rectangular elongated strips or slats, showing a series of labels in position on two of the slats. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, on a smaller scale, with the slats removed, disclosing a cross-rod adapted to effect the movements of the longitudinal slats. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 1, taken on line A A of Fig. 1.
With the above brief description I will now proceed to more fully describe my invention by referring to corresponding numerals 0n the drawings and the specification, in which 1 designates a top plan view of the invention, which is constructed of a rectangular frame 2, made of any suitable material, T or U shaped iron being preferable. Said frame is rounded at the corners, as shown, and is provided with a strengthening-rod or crossbar 3 central thereto. Adjacent to said cross-bar is a round rod 4, provided with a suitable number of outwardly projecting studs or lingers 5. Said rod, however, may be constructed of a single rod bent to produce said outward-projecting fingers 5, and said rod is provided with a right-angle handle 6. The longitudinal bars or slats are hinged to the rectangular frame 2 at 7, as indicated at Fig. 3. Said rod 4 is pivotally supported to the rectangular frame at 8 and 9.
I have shown but one cross-rod 3 central of the rectangular frame; but if I find it to be expedient I can use more than one without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The handle 6 when in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, rests upon an outwardly-extending pin 10. The object of said pin is to hold the handle slightly in elevation above a table (not shown) upon which the labeling device rests. The object of bolding the handle in this horizontal position is that it renders it more convenient to be grappled by the operator. In order that rod 4:
may not give or bend downward when brought in contact with the under side of the longitudinal-slats, which I will designate 11, I have provided eyebolts 12, secured to the cross bars 3, through which the rod 1 passes. At the opposite side from the handle 6 of the rectangular platform 1 is stationary longitudinal bar 13. The labels that are to be placed upon the bottles are designated 14. These are shown in proper position on the longitudinal bars 11.
The operation of my invention and the labeling process is as follows: The longitudinal bars are all in the position forming a level surface, as indicated at Fig. l, and when in this position the handle 6 is in a horizontal position resting upon the outward-projecting pin 10. The labels, which are indicated 14, are then placed on the level surface of the platform 1. Their ends, pointing in the direction from the handle 6, overlap the joints between the longitudinal slats 11, (indicated 15, 16, 17, and 18.) Before placing the labels on the bars 11 the bars are all saturated with a thin paste. Then the labels are placed on all of the bars, as indicated in the first two bars, already covered with the labels, their outer ends extending over the joints, as indicated. l/Vhen this is done, the handle 6 is grasped and drawn upward to a perpendicular position, as seen in Fig. 3. This movement brings the outward-projecting lingers 5 in contact with the under side of the longitudinal bars, which simultaneously raises them all in the position shown also at Fig. 3, leaving the upper ends of the labels extending over the longitudinal bars, as indicated also in Fig. 1. W hen in this position, the projecting ends can readily be grasped between the thumb and finger of the operator and transferred to the bottle or box.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a labeling device of the character described, the rectangular frame, across-bar in the frame, a cross-rod having projecting fingers, pivotally mounted in the frame, adjacent to the cross-bar, an oummrd-projecting pin secured to the frame, a handle secured to said rod and adapted to rest on the pin, a plurality of rectangular bars or slats pivotally secured to the rectangular frame and adapted to be tilted by the movements of the cross-rod and the fingers; substantially as described.
2. In a labeling device of the character described a rectangular frame, longitudinal bars, pivotally mounted to the frame, a crossrod, protruding fingers carried by said rod,
In testimony whereof I afiix rn y signature in and adapted to engage and disengage the the presence of tWo Witnesses. under side of the longitudinal bars, said bars being adapted to receive a plurality of labels, and hold them in a desired position until extracted by an operator; substantially as described.
