GEORGE HIGGINSON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE PULMAN PATENTS COMPANY, LIMITED, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER, FILE, PAPER-CLIP, AND THE LIKE.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Eatented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed July 8,1905. Serial No. 268,786.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, GEORGE HIGGINSON, mechanical engineer, of 1 and 2 Ham Yard, Piccadilly Circus, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in A and Relating to Loose-Leaf Binders, Files,Pa-
per-Clips, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose-leaf binders, les, paper-clips, and the like, and has for its object to provide a convenient means of binding and holding papers or documents securely. A loose-leaf binder, file, or the like made in accordance with this invention comprises a bottom plate, side plates formed in one with or secured to the bottom plate, a back plate L-shaped in form and pivotally mounted to the side plates or the bottom plate, and a top plate pivotally mounted to the side plates and provided with a beading adapted to engage with a groove in one arm of the L- shaped back plate when it is in its closed or normal position and provided with springs adapted to coact with the other arm of the L- shaped back plate to allow relative movement between the top plate and said L-shaped plateand to force and hold the groove onto the beading when the parts are in their closed or normal positions. The top plate is also provided with a spring adapted to bear upon the papers and press them onto the bottom plate and hold them in position. The bottom plate may be provided with posts, studs, or pins whereon the papers may be filed.
Referring now to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of one form of the device with the top plate removed. Fig. 2 is a section on line A A, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the top plate. Fig. 4: is a section on line B B, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section on lineO O,
Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a similar view to Figs. 2 and 4:, showing all the parts in the closed or normal position.
a is the bottom plate, and b b are side plates, formed in one with or secured to the bottom plate a.
0 is a back plate pivotally mounted on the bottom plate a and d and provided with a flange e.
f andg g are arms of a secondary back plate L-shaped in cross-section, of which the arm f is secured against the back 0, and the arms 9 g normally lie against the bottom plate a. Part lb of this secondary back plate is bent back and passed through a slot in the back plate a, so as to form a thumb-plate, and part i is bent so as to form a groove jbetween the end of said secondary back plate and the flange 6.
it is the top plate, pivotally mounted to the side plates 6 6 in holes on m.
n is a rod secured to the top plate 70, having ends 0 0, adapted to fit into the holes mm to form the pivots of said top plate.
p is a beading to the topplate 70, adapted in the closed or normal position of the device to fit into the groove j.
q q are springs secured to the top plate 13 and adapted to coact With the arms g g to allow relative movement between the top plate In and the back plate 0 and to force and hold the groove 7' onto the beading p when the parts are in their closed or normal positions.
0" is a spring secured to the top plate in and adapted to bear upon the papers and press them onto the bottom plate a and hold them in position.
3 s s are filing-posts mounted on the bottom plate a, and the spring 1" is cut away, as at t, opposite the posts .9.
The top plate may be provided with a hinged extension u for binding or other purposes.
In use, assuming the device to be closed and the parts in their normal position, the device is opened by depressing the thumb-plate it, thus moving the back plate 0 on its pivot cl and raising the arms g 9 against the action of the springs q q to disengage the beading p from the groove j. The top plate Z", is then turned on its pivots 0 0, so as to move the spring 7* away from the bottom plate a, and the papers can then be inserted or removed, as desired, In this position the top plate it is out of the way and allows of easy handling of the papers. To close the device, the top plate k is moved on its pivots 0 0, so that the springs q q engage with the arms g g and force the arm f (and back plate 0) against the beading 19. On further rotation of the top platelc the heading 2) rides up the bent part a and engages the groove j,and the action of the springs q q on the arms g g forces said groove over the beading 9, thus firmly closing the device.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In loose-leaf binders,files,paper-clips and the like a bottom plate, side plates secured to said bottom plate, twomoving plates, one pivoted on said side plates and one to the bottom plate, a groove in one of said moving plates, an edge on the other moving plate, said edge being spring-pressed into said groove when the device is in its closed or normal position, substantially as described.
2. Theimproved bindingdevicecomprising the combination of a bottom plate, side plates secured to said bottom plate, a back plate L- shaped in form and pivotal] y mounted on said bottom plates, a top plate 'pivotally mounted on said side plates, a beading on said top plates, a groove in one arm of said L-shaped back plate adapted to engage said beading when the device is in its closed or normal position, springs on said top plate adapted to coact With the other arm of the L-shaped back plate, and means for holding the papers in position, substantially as described.
3. The improved bindingdevice comprising the combination of a bottom plate, side plates secured to said bottom plate, a back plate L- sbaped in form and pivotally mounted on said bottom plate, a top plate pivotally mounted on said side plates, a beading on said top plate, a groove in one arm of said L-shaped back plate adapted to engage said beading When the device is in its closed or normal position, springs on said top plate adapted to coact With the other arm of the L-shaped back plate, filing-posts rigidly secured to said bottom plate, and a paper-clipping spring secured to said top plate, substantially as described.
4:. The improved binding device comprising the combination of a bottom plate, side plates secured to said bottom plate, a back plate L- shaped in form and pivotally mounted on said my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
