RUDOLPH W. GOEB, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES FIBER STOPPER COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF SOUTH DAKOTA.
PULP STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 1o, 1905.
To [all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH 1W. Gone, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pulp Stoppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved stopper, and Eig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in stoppers for bottles and the like, the object being to produce a stopper from fibrous material, such as paper-pulp, which is impervious to the contents of the make a tight joint, one which has a hard-finished surface, preventing the stopper from unduly swelling, one which is durable and light, and one which is cheap and easily made.
iVith these objects in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the inveiition, all as will be hereinafter described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings the stopper is shown as an ordinary bottle-stopper whose body portion is tapered, as usual, for well-understood purposes. The stopper shown in the accompanying drawings is designed as an improvement upon the stopper' shown in the Rivers patent,- No. 726,761, dated April 28, 1903. In the stopper shown in the said Rivers patent the principal fibers lie in a direction parallel to the axis and diverge outwardly at the ends of the stopper, the fibers at the ends of the stopper lying in planes at angles to the firstmentioned fibers, the surface of the stopper being calender-ed to preserve its shape. It has been found in this art of manufacturing Stoppers and like articles from paper-pulp that the fibers of the pulp will arrange themselves substantially at right angles to the direction of applied lpressure as long as the density of the pulp is sufficiently low to permit of the movement of the fibers in such an arrangement. Of course, when the density is increased the fibers are restrained from free movement, and consequently are liable to maintain their original position or become 'to have movement to endwise pressure. .fibers at the ends of the stopper, as indicated bottle, one which is sufhciently yielding to bent at one end, even though the restraining infiuence preserves the alinement of the other end of any given fiber.
The stopper shown in the accompanying drawings is produced by an apparatus shown and described in an application for patent filed by me of even date herewith, Serial No. 241,865, and I will, therefore, not here describe the method therein disclosed, nor will I further refer to the apparatus and details of construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings the center of the stopper has its fibers lying in angular relations to each other, as indicated at l, which is the result of subjecting a stopper, such as shown in said Rivers patent, when the density thereof is sufficiently low to permit the fibers The at 2, lie principally in planes transverse to the 'axis of the stopper, while the surface of the :stopper is calendered, as at 3.
I am aware that changes in the form, pioportion` and minor details of my invention can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, isw
l. As a new article of manufacture, a pulp stopper whose central or middle portion is composed of fibers lying in angular relations to each other; substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pulp stopper whose central or middle portion is composed of fibers lying at angles to each other and whose end fibers lie principally in planes transverse to the axis of the stopper; substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a pulp stopper whose central or middle portion is composed of fibers lying principally in angular relations to each other, the periphery of said stopper being calendered; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of January, 1905.
RUDOLPH IV. GOEB. iVitnesses:
F. R. CoRNwALL, GEORGE BAKEWELL.
