To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns M. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Varming Booths; and I do declare the following to be afull,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a portable heating or warming booth for the use of firemen, linemen, or other members of a fire-engine company or crew when they are fighting a fire during cold weather and must remain on duty any great length of time.
One object of the invention is to provide a collapsible or knockdown booth of this character which may be compactly folded to occupy but little space when not in use, so that it may be conveniently carried upon a fire,- engine or a hose-carriage, and one which may be quickly set up and attached to one of the wheels of a fire-engine when it is desired to make use of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of one form of my improved heating-booth, showing it set up and applied to one of the wheels of a fire-engine, the wheel being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the folding frame of the booth, the covering or casing being removed. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the boothframe partially folded or collapsed. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the same entirely folded. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the hinge or joint of the folding end sections of the boothframe, and Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of one of the corner-couplings and hinge connections of the booth-frame.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes one of the wheels of a fire-engine truck, to which my heating or warming booth 2 is removably attached. This booth 2 may be of any suitable form and construction. The booth illustrated in the drawings is adapted to collapse by certain of its parts folding upon others; but it may be made of telescoping sections or of two or more sections which may be bolted or otherwise secured together, orit may be otherwise constructed.
The booth 2 consists of two side frames 3 of rectangular form, which are preferably composed of sections of tubes or pipes 4t united at their ends by right-angular couplings 5, each of which has a projecting apertured lug 6, to which the outer ends of sectional end bars 7 are pivoted, as shown at 8. These sectional end bars 7 are composed of two or more sections 9, which are pivotally connected by the hinges or joints 10. (Shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.) These end bars 7 fold inwardly, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, so that the two side frames 3 may fold upon each other when it is desired to collapse the booth.
The sides and top of the booth-frame may be covered in any desired manner; but Ipreferably employ flexible material and detachably secure it upon the frame. For the four sides of the booth-frame I preferably employ rubber cloth 11 and for the top a suitable covering 12 of asbestos. These coverings 11 and 12 are preferably detachably connected by forming them with buttonholes 13, which are engaged with buttons 14, disposed at suitable intervals upon the booth-frame, as shown. When the asbestos top is sufficiently flexible, the booth may be collapsed or folded without removing the same or the side coverings 11; but if the top 12 is of asbestosboard the same must be unbuttoned and removed from the frame before it can be folded.
The booth after it has been set up may be attached to any part of the fire-engine or to any other object, so that it will not be liable to be knocked or blown over; but I preferably provide the booth-frame with suitable hooks or arms 15, which are adapted to engage one of the Wheels 1 of a fire-engine truck, as shown. It will be understood'that any other suitable construction may be provided for attaching the booth to the Wheel.
l/Vhile the interior of the booth after it has been set up may be heated in any desired manner, lpreferably employa portable steam heater or radiator which is connected up with the steam-boiler of the engine or the exhaust of the latter. This radiator is constructed of light material, such as aluminium, steamproof rubber cloth, or the like, so that it may be readily carried from place to place, and it has no direct connection with the heating booth. As shown, it consists of a body 16, supported upon legs 17 and provided at one end with a drain-cock 18 and at its other end with a connection 19, to which the steam pipe or tubing 20, which leads from the source of steam-supply upon the fire-engine, is connected. This connection 19 has the usual cut-off valve 21. The tube or pipe 20 is preferably of rubber. lt will be understood that instead of using; this steam heater or radiator I may employ an oil-stove or any other form of heater within the booth.
The use and mam advantages of my invention will be readily understood from thetoregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. lt will be seen that the device lills a long e t want and will save firemen and others who light a tire during cold weather much sullering'. Since the device may be comrmctly folded to occupy but little space, it may be conveniently carried upon a lire-engine or hose-truck, and owing; to the simplicit ol the construction it may be quickly setup when there is need for it.
While l have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that l do not wish to be limited to the construction herein set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in- Vention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of a portable knockdown heatingbooth, means for securing the same to one of the wheels of a lire-engine, a heater in said booth and means for connecting the same to the apparatus upon a lire-engine.
