Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Sept. 26, 1905,
Application filed July 10. 1905. Serial No. 268,994.
-/.'n all whom, it may concern:
, Be it known that L ALBER'T A. PAULY, a citizen of the United States of America. residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ConcreteBlock-Forming Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in concrete-block-forming machines; and the invention relates more particularly to mechanism for compressing concrete.
The object of the present invention is to provide novel means for compressing concrete or the like substance, and to this end I have devised novel mechanism for raising and lowering a plunger adapted to compress concrete.
The mechanism is particularly adapted for that type of machinesillustrated and described in my pending application for patent,- filed June 24, 1905, Serial No. 266,791, wherein a concrete-block-forming machine is set forth for rapidly manipulating molds or .cribs for forming concrete blocks; but I do not careto confine myself to this type of machine, as it is readily applicable to other types.
The construction entering into the mechanism will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and, referring to the-drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved mechanism as applied to a machine. Fig; 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line we: of Fig. 1, the mechanism being disconnected from the machine; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation of a portion of the plunger.
To put my invention into practice, I have illustrated a framework- 1 of, my improved machine as set forth in the application above mentioned, this frameworkconsisting of a rectangular frame having rollers 2 journaled therein, said frame being supported by suitable legs 3. Upon these rollers the molds filled with concrete are moved back and forth to be compressed to form blocks, and the present invention resides in a novel form of compressor which I use in connection with the framework 1. p
- Upon the framework 1, preferably central thereof,'I mount four standards 4:, these standards having their lower ends secured to the edges of the framework 1 by suitable brackets 5 5, while theupper ends of said standards are connected together and braced by a plate 6. Slidably mounted upon the standards 4 is a substantially H shaped frame 7, the bosses- 8-8 of which slide upon the standards 1. The frame 7 is provided with an elongated opening 9, and journaled transversely of said frame is a shaft 10,'Wl1lCl1 passes through the sides of said opening- Mounted upon this shaft within the opening is a toothed wheel 11,
- adapted to engage with a depending rack-bar 12, carried by the plate 6. The ends of the shaft 10 are provided with suitable crankhandles 14: 14, whereby the shaft 10 can be rotated. Upon the frame 7 adjacent to the toothed Wheel 11 is pivotally mounted a gravity-pawl 15, adapted to normally engage the toothed wheel 11 and prevent it from rotating rearwardly until the pawl is elevated.
Each one of the bosses 8 is provided with an inwardly-depending arm 16, the lower ends of which are bent outwardly and .pierced, as indicated at 17, in order that a plate 1-8 can be secured to the ends of the arms 16 by bolts and nuts 19.
The frame 7 together with the arms 16 and the plate 18, forms a vertically-reciprocating framework or plunger which is manually actuated by rotating the shaft 10 when it is desired to elevate the plunger, it only being necessary to press downwardly upon the loose end of the pawl 15 torelease the toothed wheel 11 and permit the plunger to descend.
In operation the mold filled with the concreteor substance to be compressed is moved upon the rollers 2 beneath the plunger, at which time the pawl 15 is released and the plunger permitted to descend into engagement with the concrete. By the rotating of the shaft 10 -in the proper direction the plunger can be forced into further engagement with the concrete to compress the same; but when the plunger is made of-a suflicient weight its own descent will be sufficient to compress the concrete into the desired form.
I do not care to confine myselfto manually manipulating the plunger, as a suitable engine or motor may be employed for accomplishing the same result.
It will be noted that various changes may i be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
V hat 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a frame having rollers journaled therein, of standards carried by said frame, a plate connecting said standards together, a frame slidably mounted upon said standards, a plunger carried by said standards, a shaft journaled in said frame and having suitable cranlvhandles, a toothed wheel mounted upon said shaft, a rack carried by said plate and meshing with said toothed wheel, a pawl pivotally mounted upon said frame and normally engaging said toothed Wheel, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a frame having rollers journaled therein, of standards carried by said frame, a racl -bar carried by said standards, a frame slid-ably mounted upon said standards, a plunger carried by said frame, a toothed wheel journaled in said frame and meshing with said rack-bar, means to rotate said toothed wheel and means to norm ally hold said wheel in a locked position, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a frame having rollers journaled therein, of standards carried by said frame, a frame slidably mounted upon said standards,a plunger carried by said frame, means to elevate said frame, and means to lock said frame in an elevated position, substantially as described.
4. Mechanism of the character described consisting of standards, a rack-bar carried by said standards, a frame slidably mounted upon said standards, a plunger carried by said frame, a toothed wheel journaled in said frame, and meshing with said rack-bar, means to rotate said toothed wheel and means to lock said toothed wheel in a fixed position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my sigllaturc in the presence of two witnesses.
