Be it known that I, JASPER HENRY CREEL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Lorra ns, 1n the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Railway-Rail Joint, ofwhich the followingis.
will appear as the nature of the invention is,
better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

The improved device comprises a railwayrail, (represented at 10,) having at one end a recess 11, preferably in the bottorn'or the side and extending partly therethrough with the inner end of the recess enlarged laterally, as at 12, and with a pin 13 disposed centrally of the enlarged portion of the recess. At the opposite end the rail is provided with a projection 14, corresponding to the recess 11, and with a lateral enlargement 15, corresponding to the enlarged portion of the recess and also provided with an aperture 16, corresponding to the pin 13 of the recess, so that when a plurality of rails thus equipped are placed end to end the projections of one rail will fit the recesses of the adjacent rails while the pins in the recess of one rail will fit the apertures in the lugs of the other rail, as represented in Fig. 2. A transverse clamp-bolt 17 is disposed through the rail and the projection 14 to firmly bind Fig. 2 is a bottom the parts and prevent vertical movement. The rails are increased in thickness opposite the recesses 11 and also at the opposite ends where theprojections 14 are disposed to strengthen and reinforce the joint.
By this simple means a very compact,strong,
and durable rail-joint is produced which may be inexpensively manufactured and will not add materially t0 the expense of construction.
The clamp-plates and clam p-bolts employed in railway-rail joints as heretofore constructed are dispensed with, as will be obvious.v
thereby-saving materially in the expense of construction and the labor of assembling the parts.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is-- 1. A railway-rail having a recess at one end with the inner end of the recess enlarged laterally and with a pin disposed centrally of the enlarged portion and with a projection extending from the other end of the rail and enlarged at the terminal and with an aperture through the enlarged portion, theprojection of one rail entering the recess of the other rail with the aperture of the projection en- 'gaging'the pin of the recess.
2. A railway-rail having a recess in the bottom thereof at one end and extending partly therethrough with the inner end of the recess enlarged laterally and with a pin disposed centrally of the enlarged portion, and with a pro' jection extending from the other end of the rail at'the bottom and enlarged at the terminal and with an aperture through the enlarged portion, the projection of one rail entering the recess of the adjacent rail with the aperture of the projection engaging-the pin of the relarged at the terminal and with an aperture through the enlarged portion, and a clamp bolt disposed transversely through therecess and the projection disposed therein.
