Be itknown that I, EDWARD A. CowLEs, a resident of Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsyl ania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relatesv to chucks such as are used on lathes, boring mills, milling-machines, drilling-machines, and other metal and wood working machines. v
My invention relates especially to that type of chucks having a number of radially-movable jaws, together with means for moving all said jaws simultaneously, and which are ordinarily known as universal chucks, and also that type of chucks having a number of radially-movable jaws, together with means for moving all said jaws either simultaneously or independently, and which are ordinarily known as combination-chucks.
The object of my invention is to improve chucks of this character by providing simple,
cheap, and easily-applied means for holding in place the jaw-actuating pinion or pinions, this means comprisinga key engaging shoul: ders on the pinion and on the chuck-body and held in place by means of the backing-plate ofthe chuck.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure l is aface view of a lathe-chuck constructed substantially according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 2 Fig. 3 is a side view of the actuating-pinion, and Fig. 4 shows side and edge views of the pinion-retaining key.
My invention may be applied to any form of universal or combination chuck. In the drawings it has been shown applied to a lathechuck; but this has been selected for purposes of illustration merely.
The chuck-body, which is a solid piece, is
. shown at 1, and this is provided on its front face with a series of radial ways 3, in which are mounted the jaws 4. These jaws may be of any suitable or desirable form, those shown being of the reversible type having'grippingfaces on both ends and having the faces on' one endstepped, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
' The several jaws have been shown as independently adjustable; but this is no part of my invention. They are shownas provided with threaded bottom faces which are engaged by screws 6,'mounted in jaw-carriers 7 These jaw-carriers are movable radially in the by actuating-pinions 12.
The scroll-gear 9 is provided on its lower or outer face with teeth 11, which are engaged One such pinion 12 is sufficient; but preferably two or more will be employed for the purpose of balancing the chuck and convenience in using, three being shown inthe drawings.
The actuating-pinions are each provided on their inner ends with a journal 13, which pro jects into a suitable seat or bearing formed in the chuck-body and serves as a bearing to take up inward thrust. At their outer ends the gears are each provided with an enlarged journal 14, having a bearing in an opening formed in the outer shell or rim 15 of the body. These gears at their outer ends are provided with suitable means whereby they can be rotated, such as the. polygonal socket 16 for receiving a key or wrench. It will be obvious that by turning anyone of the pinions 12 the scroll-gear 11 will be rotated, and thus move the jaws simultaneously inwardly or outwardly. ject to provide simple and cheap means for. retaining'the pinions 12 in place. To this end the pinions are provided just inside of the shell 15 of the body with necks or shoulders 17. Inserted between the shoulders thus formed on the gears and the inner face of the body-shell are suitable retaining-keys 18, which may be of various forms, but which preferably will be of U shape,-a s shown in Fig. 4,- so as to form a bearing for the shoulder 17 and against the inner face of the bodyrim 15 for the greater portion of the'circumference of the gear and of the opening in the body-rim. Inasmuch as the body is open on its rear, these retaining-keys can be easily slipped in place.- They will be held from,
falling out by means of the backing-plate 19, which is provided on all such forms of chucks in order to keep dirt from getting into the cavity of the chuck-body.

What I claim is- 1. In a chuck, the combination of a body provided on one face With ways and having an annular cavity in its opposite side and having the central and rim portions on said face integral with the body, jaws mounted in said Ways, a scroll-gear mounted in the annular cavity and engaging said jaws, and a pinion engaging said seroll-gear and projecting into an-openi-ng in the rim of the body, said gear having a bearing in said rim and in the integral central portion of the body, and a key engaging shoulders on the pinion and on the chuck-body and serving to prevent displacement of said pinion.
2. In a chuck, the combination of a body provided on one face with ways and having an annular cavity in its opposite face and having the central and rim portions on said face integral with the body, jaws mounted in said ways, a scroll-gear mounted in the annular cavity and engaging said jaws, a pinion engaging the scroll-gear, said pinion projecting into an opening in the rim of the chuck-body and having a bearing in said rim and in the integral central portion of the body, and being provided With an annular shoulder, and a U- shaped key held in the chuck-body and engaging said annular shoulder and serving to prevent displacement of said pinion.
3. In a chuck, the combination of a body provided on one face With ways and having an annular cavity in its opposite face, jaws mounted in said Ways, a scroll-gear mounted in the annular cavity and engaging said jaws and serving to move the same, a pinion also mounted in the annular cavity and engaging the scroll-gear for rotating the same, said pinion projecting into an opening in the rim of the chuck-body and being provided with an annular shoulder, a U-shaped key between the annular shoulder of said pinion and the rim of the chuck-body, and a backing-plate closing the annular cavity in the chuck-body and serving to retain the key in place.

In a chuck, the combination of a body provided on one face with ways and having an annular cavity in its opposite face, jaws mounted in said ways, a scroll-gear in the annular cavity and engaging said jaws, a pinion engaging the scroll-gear for rotating the same, said pinion projecting into an opening in the rim of the chuck-body and being provided with an annular shoulder, a key between the annular shoulder on said pinion and the rim of the chuck-body, and means for retaining the key in place.
5. In a chuck, the combination of a body provided on one face with ways and having an annular cavity in its opposite face, jaws mounted in said ways, a scroll-gear in the annular cavity and engaging said jaws, a pinion men n ted in the annular cavity and engaging the scroll -gear, said pinion projecting into an opening in the rim of the chuck-body and being provided with an annular shoulder, a U- shaped key engaging said annular shoulder and the rim of the chuck-body, and means for retaining said key in place.
6. In a chuck, the combination of a body provided on one face with ways and having an annular cavity in its opposite face, jaws mounted in said ways, a scroll-gear mounted in the annular cavity and engaging said jaws, a pinion also mounted in the annular cavity and engaging the scroll-gear, said pinion projecting into an opening in the rim of the chuckbody and being provided with an annular shoulder, a key between said annular shoulder and the rim of the chuck-body, and a backingplate closing said annular cavity and serving to retain the key in place.
