To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, VAL MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hewins, in the county of Chautauqua and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Checkrein-Loop Retainers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in loops for harness-checkreins, contemplating particularly the production of a loop designed to be engaged with the harness-hook, the construction being such that accidental disengagement of the parts is prevented.

The main object of the invention is the production of a spring-arm arranged for fixed connection with the checkrein-loop and adapted to engage the harness-hook when the loop is in place to prevent accidental disengagement of the parts.

The invention will be described in detail in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation showing a checkrein-loop engaged with the harness-hook and provided with my improved springcatch. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improved loop.

Referring to the drawings, wherein like parts are designated bylike reference-nunierals throughout both views, 1 represents the usual checkrein having terminally connected thereto any preferred form of metal loop 2, the eye 3 of which is designed to engage the usual hook 4, supported on the harness-saddle 5. These parts are of usual or preferred construction, and in their use eX- perience has demonstrated that the movement of the horses head is apt to disengage the loop from the hook, and itis to prevent this accidental disengagement that the present invention is designed.

The invention comprises a spring retaining member 6, preferably of U shape, secured at its connected terminal to the upper portion of the loop, being preferably fixed in suitable eyes 7. The free ends of the retainer extend forward in practically parallel relation to provide arms 8, which overlie and project beyond the eye member 3. The arms 8 about centrally above the eye are each bent outwardly to provide an angular recess 9, the recess in each arm being projected laterally from the longitudinal center of the loop member, as shown. The bends 9 of the arms are in transverse alinement, providing an enlarged space intermediate the arms for the reception of the hook 4. The free ends of the arms converge, so that immediately in. front and in rear of the enlargement described the arms are sufficiently close together to prevent passage of the hook therebetween.

In use the loop is passed over the hook in the usual manner, the prong of the hook passing through the enlargement between the bends 9 in the arms ,8, the space between these bends being of a size to just receive the hook, so that the arms will bear frictionally on the surface of the hook. This construction prevents accidental disengagement of the parts, as will be evident.

The retainer may be secured in any suitable manner to the loop, such as soldering or the like, so that retainers of my invention are readily applicable to checkrein-loops at present in use.

By preference the retainer is composed of a single length of spring-wire, though 1 contemplate other material and sectional form.

'Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a checkrein-loop, of a retainer secured thereto and comprising a U-shaped wire structure, the terminals of said structure overlying the hook-opening in the loop and being each formed with a laterally-projected bend, the bends of both terminalsbeing arranged in transverse alinement to provide a hook-receiving opening overlying the hook-opening of the loop.

2. The combination with a checkrein-loop provided with spaced eyes, of a retainer secured thereto and comprising a U-shaped wire structure, the terminals of said structure being laterally projected in opposite directions above the hook-opening of the loop, said retainer being secured in the eyes formed on the loop.
