Description

PATENTED SEPT. 19. 1905.
Ill!
HERBERT- e. SMITH, or GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
CLOTHES-SPRINKLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
Application filed February 4, 1905- Serial No, 244,090;
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT Gr. SMITH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Sprinklers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in clothes-sprinklers; and its object is to pro- I vide means whereby the clothing may be instantly and uniformly dampened on both sides, to provide improved means for subdividing the water into a fine spray, and to provide the device with various new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My device consists, essentially, of a deep sink, water-pipes and air-pipes at each side of the same and near the top thereof, stop cocks on the respective air and water pipes and provided with nozzles arranged in close relation to each other, whereby the air-jets project the water in a fine spray in opposite directions and upon the respective sides of the clothing, means for supplying water at constant pressure, comprising a water-tank and a float-valve, a screen near the bottom of the sink to prevent the clothing from getting into the water at the bottom of the sink, and in various features of construction and arrangement as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a device embodying my invention and taken on the line 1 l of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same on of Fig. 1.
Like numbers refer to like parts in both of the figures.
1 represents a sink of any convenient dimensions, preferably in the form of a deep box open at the top and provided with inwardly-inclined tables 2 at its opposite sides and projecting both within and without the sink and forming a suitable support on which the clothing may be laid as occasion requires. These tables are preferably hinged, as shown, whereby they may be turned to a vertical position to give ready access to the cooks and pipes beneath the same.
3 represents a wire screen located at a suflicient distance from the bottom of the sink the line 2 2.
to prevent the clothing from getting wet by the water thatmay accumulate therein.
1 is a drain-pipe to carry away the water that accumulates below the screen 3.
5 is a tank to supply water to the device at uniform pressure and located for that purpose at a suflicient distance above the sink to provide the necessary gravity-pressure. In this tank is maintained aconstant quantity of water by means of a supply-pipe 6, connected to any hydrant or other suitable water-supply and provided within the tank 5 with a float-valve 7 of the usual construction, whereby the water is maintained at a constant level in the tank. Conducting-pipes 8 extend from this tank to distributing-pipes 9, arranged near the top of the sink 1 beneath the tables 2. At intervals the distributing-pipes 9 are provided with stop-cocks 10, to which are attached downwardlyprojecting nozzles 11,the ends of which nozzles are flattened to form narrow slits for the escape 'of water in a thin broad film directly in front of corresponding flat nozzles 15, arranged at right angles thereto and projecting from stop-cocks 14, inserted in airdistributing pipes 13, provided with air under pressure by means of a pipe 12, extending to any suitable air-supply. These nozzles 11 and 15 are arrangedin close proximity to each other. The water-nozzles open downward, and the air-nozzles open horizontally at right angles thereto and both being flattened they project thin flat streams of Water and air at right angles to each other. The air thus projects the water in a very minute spray in opposite directions toward the middle portion of the sink, where itforms a fine mist and is applied uniformly, finely, and rapidly to any clothing that may be placed therein. Should the clothing extend downward sufficiently, it will be arrested by the screen 3, and thus prevented from getting into the water accumulated at the bottom of the sink. The waterpressure being uniform, the spray is maintained uniform, and being projected in opposite directions simultaneously against both sides of the vertically-suspended clothing dampens the same uniformly and quickly, thus adapting the device to operate very rapidly as the clothing is manipulated by the operator.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a sink, tables above the sink and projecting inwardly over the same, air-pipes and Water pipes beneath the tables, nozzles on the air and water pipes and arranged in pairs, a tank connected to the water-pipes, a float-valve in the tank, means for supplying Water to the tank, and means for supplying air to the air-pipes.
2. The combination of a sink, inclined tables at the top of the sink, Water-pipes and airpipes below the tables and near the top of the sink, flattened nozzles connected to the said pipes and arranged in pairs, a Water-tank above the sink, a supply-pipe and float-valve for the tank, means for supplying air to the air-pipes, and a screen above the bottom of the sink.
3. The combination of a sink, ascreen above the bottom of the sink, inclined tables hinged to-the top of the sink and projecting Within and Without the same, air-pipes and Waterpipes below the tables, stop-cocks at intervals on the pipes, nozzles on the stop-cocks and arranged in pairs, a Water-tank above the sink and connected to the Water-pipes, a supply-pipe and float-valve for the Water-tank, and means for supplying air to the air-pipes.
In testimony WhereofI affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
