REGISTER-HOOK FOR COLOR-PLATE PRINTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed August 22, 1904;. Serial No. 221,753.
To all 10/7/0711 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERNHARD LUDWIG, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of the Bronx, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Register Hooks for Color-Plate Printing, of which the following is a specification.
The register-hooks employed at the present time for holding in position the color-plates for multicolor-printing are of complicated construction and expensive, and as a very large number of these register-hooksis required the total expense incurred through their use is very onerous.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved register-hook which by virtue of its simple construction can be manufactured much more cheaply than the register-hooks now in use and which can be adjusted with greater facility to the beveled edges of the color-plates; and for this purpose the invention consists in a register-hook embodying the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved register-hook. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same taken on line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 2.
. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, (0 indicates the body portion or block of my improved register-hook, which is preferably made of approximately cubical form, as shown. A recess b is formed at one side of the block, being also cut from the top thereof, and a threaded bore 6, which is a continuation of said recess and alined therewith, passes longitudinally through the block, preferably at a slight inclination to the horizontal plane of the same, so as to direct the clamping action at right angles to the beveled edge of the plate.
A set-screw c engages the bore 1/ and has the head (Z thereof movable inv the recess 6, said head projecting above said recess and the top of the block, as shown in Fig. 2. In order to permit the adjustment of the set-screw 0, the head (i is provided with a number of small holes for the insertion of a suitable pin or similar device, whereby the rotation of said head and the consequent advance or retreat of the set-screw in the bore is obtained.
In order to take up the space between the head of the set-screw and the plate, so that the range of action of the register-hook may be increased, and for the purpose of permitting the more accurate adjustment of the plate, one or more filling-pieces are guided upon the top of the block and adapted to be adjusted by means of the head of the setscrew. These filling-pieces are designated in the drawings by the reference-letters e and c and are shown as being provided upon their bottoms with dovetailed grooves, by
means of which they are guided in a direction parallel to the vertical plane of the bore Z) on a dovetailed projection 19, extending throughout the length of the block a, on the top thereof, said projection being formed by suitable grooves at opposite upper edges of the block, as shown in Fig. 3. It is obvious that as the filling-pieces. are guided throughout the length of the block they pass over the recess 6 in which the head (Z is movable, said head, as explained, being projected above said recess and adapted to abut against one of said filling-pieces, and thereby adjust all of the same.
A number of filling pieces of different widths must of course be employed in order to permit the accurate adjustment of the plates. The displacement and loss of the filling-pieces is obviated by the improved means for guiding the same, and said means when used in connection with the adjusting means described renders the improved register-hook of superior effectiveness and utility for the use for which it is designed.
Owing to the compact arrangement of the parts of the register-hook the color-plates can be arranged closely together in the forms and conveniently adjusted in position by the same.
The device also has the advantage that it can be manufactured at less expense than the register-hook in use at the present time.
Having thus described m y invention, Iclai m as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A register-hook for color-plates, comprising a block having a recess at one side thereof and a threaded bore, said bore being a continuation of said recess and inclined with respect to the horizontal plane of the block, a set-screw engaging said bore and having its head movable in said recess, and afilling-piece guided upon the top of the block and adjustable by the head of said set-screw. 2. A register-hook for color-plates, comprising a block provided with a recess out I extending parallel to said grooves but inclined with respect to the base of the block, and a filling-piece extending over the top of said 5 block and having a dovetailed groove engaging the dovetailed portion of said block, said filling-piece being adjustable by the head of said set-screw.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 20 my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BERNHARD LUDVVIG.
