E. J. SMITH AND F. II. PERKINS, '0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS To J.
. SMITH.
Letters Patent No. 79,922, dated July 14, 1868.
-IMPROVED SCOOP ND SIPTER.
TOV V(ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCRN Be it known that we, E. J. SM'I'LHand I". BfPERKINs, of Chicago, inthe county of Cook,'in the State of Illinois, have invented alliseful Improvement in Siftersand Scoops; .and weide hereby declare that the fol lowing isa full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t'o thev letters of reference marked thereon, making Va partei' this speciiieati'om-in which- Figure 1 is a perspective repI'esentation of our invention. VFigure 2, a. transverse sectional elevation'otthe same.
This invention relates to an improvement in `sifters and scoops, filed in the Patent Office, December 19, V1867, by F. B. Perkins; and its nature'cohsists 'in the use of metal springs, coiled around the, ends of the Vjournal ofthesifter, and fastened to the ends of vthe latter and to the scoop, whereby a reciprocating motion Y Vis had without the use of a. rubber spring, and is better made, at less cost. y
In'order that others skilled in the art may fully understand the construction and operation of our invenltion,'we have marked corresponding parts with Isimilar letters, and will now give a. detailed description.
'l A represents thel long, and B the short sides ofthe se'oop,il1aving ends C C, a. semicircular sieve, l, and handleD,`pall of which are made of sheet metal, in 'a neat and substantial manner, and like the invention referred to.V i Y' .a J represents the sifter, consisting of two end-pieces, hungon a'journaL'K, and wings m rigidly attached to them, by solder or otherwise, in a substantial mannexjand used to force the article to be sifted through the sieve I, and consequently are made about the same length.
'The device for Vmarin-g the sfter .in one direction consists of a rod,'E," a1-ra.nged to slide-in a.4 guide, F, fig. 2, rigidlyattached to the inside oi the scoop, and a curved rod, G, which is soldered fast to the inside ofithe4 Wings m, and has an eyent, to which the lower end of the rodE is hooked, sind thus forms ajoint which will allow the sifter to swing onthejournalk, and over the curved sieve Il v This curved rod wer consider an important improvement, as it answers the purpose of a support for the wings, and also a. fastening for the rod E. i
Instead of using a rubber s trapfor drawing the sifter back after it has been movediforward by the rod E, we use metal springs, H, which are attached to the ends J of the sifter, coiled around the ends of the journal K, and fastened to the angle of the scoop by means of solder or other suitable means.
Bythis arrangement the sifting-devices can-be made much more cheaply,"and are more substantial, as all ofthe parts are metal, and in'po-sition to be readily cleaned orrepaired.
` Having thus describedour device, we do not claim the rod E, nor the silter J, they'having been used before; but What we do claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-v l l The combination of the sifter J, rod E, ooilsspring H, and curved rod G, substantially asaud for the purpose hereinset forth. i v

AF. B. PERKINS.
