ment in Trunks, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to trunks and similar articles for the transportation of merchandise.

Prominent objects of the invention are to provide a simple and inexpensive form of trunk, to permit the accommodation therein of articles of various and different sizes, to permit readjustment for the accommodation of other articles of difierent sizes under different circumstances, and to secure the foregoing and other desirable results in a simple, practical, and expeditious manner.

In the trunk which I show herein for carrying out my invention I provide supports which are extended longitudinally in the trunk to hold articles in position therein and arrange for the vertical adjustment of these supports, or any of them, to accommodate articles of different size, as circumstances may require. The supports are readily adjustable to different heights in the trunk by adjustable engaging means for engaging the ends thereof at different heights in the trunk.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a trunk embodying my invention, the same being taken on line 1 1 in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views of details of construction.

The trunk shown consists of a body 1, made of any suitable or preferred construction, and a top 2, hinged thereto in any usual or desired manner. One end or vertical wall 3 of the body 1 is provided with two series of horizontal notches or recesses 4 4, each series consisting of any desired number of such notches arranged one above the other. The opposite end of the trunk is provided with a sliding frame 5, which is arranged to be elevated and lowered relatively to the body of the trunk, and each slide is provided with end projections 6, arranged to slide in vertical grooves 7 in the side walls of the trunk. The frame 5 is provided with two panels 8 8, which fit loosely in the inner side of the frame and are normally forced inwardlythat is, toward the center of the trunkby springs 9 9,.the panels having their ends notched, as shown in Fig. 3, to prevent their being pushed away from the frame 5 by the springs 9 9. In this way these panels 8 8 can be pushed backwardly into the frame 5 to some extent and will be automatically restored to their normal positions by the springs 9 9 when released. Each panel 8 8 is provided with a series of vertically-arranged horizontal grooves or channels-1O 10. The frame 5 is conveniently provided with a finger or thumb aperture 11, by which it can be raised and lowered. by the hand. Supports 12 12, conveniently in the form of slats or strips, are engaged at their 7 opposite ends by the grooves 4 4 inthe end 3 and the grooves 10 10 in the panels 8 8. The slats 12 12 can be adjusted either together or independently to any desired height in the trunk by engaging their ends in different grooves or channels in the trunk end 3 and the panels 8 8 of the frame 5. To remove one of the slats and place it in a different position, it is grasped by the hand and pushed toward the frame 5, so that its opposite end is disengaged from the groove 4, in which it is then resting, and then released from the correspondinggroove in the panel 8. It is placed in the new position by inserting its end in the desired groove 10 in the panel 8 and then pushing the panel in, so that the opposite end can be engaged in the corresponding groove 4. In this way either or both of the slats can be raised or lowered in any desired manner.

The top 2 of the trunk can be of any preferred arrangement or construction; but as a matter of further improvement it is provided with a bottom 18, hinged at the back edge of the trunk and provided with a spring-catch 14, by which its forward end is latched in position. If desired, the frame 5 can be entirely removed and the supports 12 12 dispensed with.

Changes and modifications can be made in the arrangement herein set forth without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction herein disclosed.

I/Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. An article of the class specified, provided with vertically-adjustable supporting members in combination with adjustable means for engaging the ends thereof at different heights, substantially as described.

2. .In. an article of the class specified, the combination with a supporting member, of means for engaging one end of said member,

and an adjustable panel provided with means for engaging the other end of the same, substantially as described.

3. In an article of the class specified, the combination with a supporting member, o f means for engaging one end thereof, an adjustable panel for engaging'the other end, said panel being horizontally adjustable to permit engagement and disengagement of the supporting member, substantially as described.

4:. In an article of the class specified, the combination with a supporting member, of means for engaging one of the ends thereof, a panel provided with means for engaging the other end of said member, said panel being horizontally adjustable, and spring means for holding said panel normally in engagement with such member, substantially as described.

5. An article of the class specified, having a series of notches at one end, in combination with an adjustable panel at the other end, said panel being provided with a corresponding series of notches, spring means for holding the panel in normal position, and a slat engaging notches in said two series of notches, substantially as described.

6. An article of the class specified having one of its ends provided with a vertically-arranged series of horizontal notches, in combination with an adjustable panel provided with a corresponding series of notches, an adjustable frame carrying said panel, spring means in said frame for holding the panel in normal position, and a slat extending between said series of notches and engaging one of each thereof, substantially as described.

7. An article of the class specified, compris ing a body having one of its ends provided with two sets of vertically-arranged horizontal notches, a sliding frame at the other end of the article, said frame being provided with a pair of horizontally-adjustable panels,spring means in said frame for holding said panels normally in an inward position, means whereby the frame can be slid vertically in and out of said body, and a pair of slats extending between said notched'end of the body and said frame and engaging notches of said sets or series, substantially as described.
