cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to temporary binders for binding together in book form a number of loose leaves, pamphlets, catalogues, or the like, and has for its objects to provide an extremely simple binder of the character referred to of few parts; to provide means for locking said binder in any of its positions of adjustment, said means residing in the construction of the binder-posts rather than additional parts or mechanism for that purpose; to provide a construction in telescoping posts for temporary binders in which a simple manipulation thereof effectively and positively locks the members of said post against telescopic movement, and in general to provide a simple, economical, and effective temporary binder of the character referred to.

To the above ends the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and will be readily understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front edge view of a temporary binder embodying the invention with cover members removed and showing the telescoping binder-posts. Fig. 2 is a side edge view of Fig. 1 with cover members attached. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1, showing a key-socket in the middle post for operating same to lock the binders together. Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views taken on line 4 5 of Fig. l of one of the binderposts showing one form of locking construction in locked and unlocked positions, respectively.

The binder-post 4 is constructed for looking the binder members in any exact position of adjustment toward or from each other, the members of which are provided with smooth interior and exterior surfaces, respectively, whereby they may slide easily one within the other. The interior of the outer member, however, is non-circular or moreor less elliptical in form in cross-section, while the exterior of the inner member corresponds therewith or is of any other suitable non-circular form in cross-section that will make its greatest exterior diameter greater than the smallest interior diameter of the outer member, whereby the turning of the interior member on its longitudinal axis operates to frictionally lock the telescoping members together in that exact position, so that the same may be locked firmly against movement at any point within In the present construction the smaller or interior member is mounted upon its binder member by means of a swivel connection and is provided in its outer 'end with a key-socket 9, whereby it may be turned into and out of locking position, though any other desirable means of turning said member might be employed.

It is obvious that modifications and alterations in the details of construction might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the embodiment and details shown except in so far as made the subjectmatter of specific claims.

I claim 1. In a binder for holdingloose leaves or the like, the combination with the back or cover members, of two telescoping members having substantially smooth non circular engaging surfaces and sliding freely one upon the other when in one position of angular adjustment and frictionally locked against sliding movement when in a changed angular position.

2. In a temporary binder for holding loose leaves, the combination with cover members, of two telescoping members mounted respectively upon said cover members, said members beingnon-circular and of a fixed uniformcross-sectional slze and sliding freely one within the other in one position of angular adjustment and frictionally locked together when in a changed angular position relative to each other.

3. In a temporary binder, the combination With back or cover members, of a pair of telescoping members mounted upon said back members, the outer telescoping member having a smooth interior, elliptical in cross-section and the inner member having a smooth exterior, elliptical in cross-section, one of said members being rotatably mounted, Whereby the turning of said member relatively to the other locks said members against longitudinal separation.

5. In a temporary binder, the combination With back members of a pair of telescoping post members of fixed uniform size, the inner member being rotatably mounted upon said back member and having a smooth elliptical exterior, the outer member being internally elliptical, and means for turning said inner member relatively to said outer member to frictionally lock said members in any adjusted position.

6. A temporary binder, comprisingin combination, a pair of binder members provided with a plurality of binder-posts, one of said posts comprising two telescoping members, one of said members being internally elliptical and the other externally elliptical, one of said members being rotatably mounted upon said binder member and of a fixed crosssectional size, and means for turning said rotatable member upon its longitudinal axis whereby to lock said telescoping members together, substantially as described.
