Description

@uiten gieten ltttent' @frn II. II. IIIILL AND GEORGE W. IISPIIY, lOIIIOORIIrs HILL, INDIANA.
LeersrPaten No. 79,751,'ddted 7,1868.V
IMPROVEMENT IN rRINrING-Iasssrs,
TO ALL lWHOM IT MAY CONQERN: v
.Be it known that we, H. M.HALL and GEORGE W. ESPEY,.of Moores Hill, in the county of Ripley, and
State of Indiana, have inventedY certain new and useful` Improvements in Printing-Presses; and'wc do hereby declare that the'foll'owing is Va full, clear, Aand exact description `thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure lirepresents a vertical longitudinal section of our printing-press, and i Figure 2 a plan or top view of the saine, a portion oi' the platen being broken away to show the 'construction more clearly.
The object of our invention is to provide a handprinting-press, in which the downward and upward motion of its hinged platen shall cause the paper to be placed in proper. position for receiving the impression of the types, and remove it therefrom after beingprinted; and to this end our` improvements consist- First, in providing a movable clamp in connection with the platen,'and operating-.in a manner hereinafter' described, to `present the paper to the type, andv withdraw itwhen printed, i
` Second',in combining a cam-shaft in thehox with hooks upon the platen, `to effect the pressing-movement.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a stout box, which forms the main part orbed ofthe press. Partitions, A1, extend across this box, between whiclnthe oor A2 is secured. Above this oor is placed the movable type-bed C, the height of which is regulated by set-screws c passing through the door. There are four of these screws, but two only appear in tig. 1, beinga section'. This arrangement enables the type-bed to be inclined-if necessary. The form D rests, upon the type-bed, and is' held firmly in position after Vthe types' have been set, by the set-scrcwso, which pass through one end of the bos and one of vthe partitiensA, and press against the plate d. Nis an adjustable ink-bed, resting on the *upper part of the box. The box has hinges B2 firmly secured to it, towhich the platen B is hinged by vpins passing through leyes in the 'ends of the strap B1. This strap issec'ured to the top' of the platen, and has its ends bent downwards at right angles to it, to moet the hingesiz, as stated.:A Slots, M, one ofwhich shown in'tig. 2, are eut 'through the platen', near its sides, and inthe direction of its length. A sliding clamp, Gr, upon the bottom of the platen, has its ends turned up to form ear's`,'G, whichA slide in the' slots M. The movablcj'hw' of this clampis operated by a handle or thumb-piece, g. The sliding motion of the clamp is`direeted by guides I, which are attached to its ends, and which slide in` slots K in thc'platen. A rod, It, extends across the topof the platen, and is secured to the ears G. A bent rod, jt', is hooked at its ends to the rod 7;and has a loop, ,.fastened toit-s centre. This loop passes through a hole in the standard L,.\vhich is tnstonc'd to thc box A in such manner as not to interfere with the movement of the platen B. I-I Il aresprings or fingers, which hold. one. end of the paper to be 4printed in 'contact with the platen, its opposite endb'eing held between the jaws of the clamp Gr.v These fingers4 are each made in two parts. That portion hy which the;r are secured to the platen is at right angles with that which forms thespring.` 'They are secured to the platen by screws passing through slots, as shown in iig. 2, which enables the distance between the e'nds of the fingers to 'oe varied to suitdiii'erent widths of paper. A strong stra-p of metal, E, is secured Vto the top of the-platen, and has the ends bent downwards at-.right angles, and formell into the hooks E. A metallic shaft, I?, extends across the box A, and turns inthe bearings Fi. It has cam-projectionsf upon it, which engage with the hooks Eattached to the platen, and has `its ends? formed square in section, sons-to reccive the wrench O by which the shaft is-tnrncd. 'l
The operation .of our printing-press is as follows: The type-bed C being set in proper position by the setscrews the typos arc set up in the form D, which is secured in place by the set-screws c', and the types inked by a suitable roller. The clamp G boing pivotcd t'o the standard L by the I-ods/r, and loop h2, the act of raising the hinged platen from the box causes the clamp G to slidealong the bottom ofthe platen, heing guided'.
bythe blocks I working in 'the slots K, until the ears G have reached the ends ,ofthe slots M whichiare farthest fronrthc hinges. The jaws of the clampG are then opened by pressing upon V tlr'elhandle or thumbpicce g, and one end of the piece of paper to be printed inserted between them. The 'lowering of the platen 'platen down upon the type, and leaves mp andpaper attached to move back to the' position shown in the drawings, through the action of the rods, loop, and standard, before stated,-and the ends of the fingers H hold the end of the paper against the platen, andprevent it from bending or doubling. 'lhe shaft F is then turned, by means of the wrench O, until the camsff catch in the hooks E E', when: further movement of the wrench brings the a clear impression upon the paper.` .The wrench is thenturned back when the platen is raised, the act of which, as before explained, moves The printed piece is removed, and` a blank upon the box causes the cla until the cams have cleared the hooks, the clamp into proper position for receiving a freshpieee of paper. one inserted, and the operation repeated.
The platen is so hin-ged to the box that it bears equally upon all the type, and a piece of cloth or velvet is placed upon it where thepaper presses against it.
Having thus fully explained our improved Aprint.I 1g-press, what we claim as new, and desire to sec Letters Paten-t, isv i I 1. The movable paperfclamp' the raising and lowering` of the platen.l
2; The combination ofthe clamp G, and :lingers H, when arranged as described, for the purpose of holding ure by G, when arrangedas described, so as to receive the necessary movement from the paper. 4
3, The combination of the`cam-shaft Fand hooks E', for giving the impressionto the paper, as set forth.
4. The combination of the clamp G, rod h', and standard L, with the slotted hinged platen B, when arranged and' operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
"In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, lwe affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
