To all whom 712'; 'nm/ 7] coll/ecru:
Be it know n that 1, '.lHoMAs R. BROWN, a citizen ot' the United States, residing' at the city, county, and @tate of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metallic-Car Construction, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccom panying drawings, forming part of this speeiiication, in whichM Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a metallic car constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig'. 2 isa side elevational view of a car at the central hopper portion, part ol.I
the plate-girder side being' broken away tov show the cross-sectional shape of one of the doors; and Fig'. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to railway-cars, and particularly to cars employing' a hopper preferably at the center thereof. c
@ne ofthe objects ot' the invention is to provide a bracing or reinforcement at the hopper portion of the car whereby the plate-girder sides and door mechanism will be materially strengthened.
1 designates one of the plate-gird er sides, of which there are two, carried by center sills, end sills, and cross-bearers.
2 designates the inclined hopper-sheets, which are secured to the plate-girder sides by angles The hopper-sheets have depending edges comprising' Hanges 1, which are arranged in a vertical plane, and secured to these depending' edges are door-hangers comprising' plates 5, riveted to the edges a and having' bearings (i, in which are journaled the hingestraps 7, which hinge-straps have depending' portions in the form of flanges 8. Secured to the hinge-straps 7 are the door-plates 9, preferably of pressed steel and provided with an embossment 10. .lhe edges of the plates 9 overlap the ends ol the hinge-straps 7, and to these overlapping edges are connected Z- beams 11, the upper flanges o1" which are secured to the under faces of the plates 9, and the webs of the beams 11 are secured to the depending flanges 8 ol. the hinge-straps 10, the lower flanges of the Z-beanns being' disposed in opposite directions. To these Z- beams are secured angles 12, having vertical tlanges secured to the webs of the Z-beams and to the straps 7 by rivets.
13 designates a reinforcing-plate, of which there are two, one on the outer face of' each plate-girder side, which plates 13 are above the hopper-opening and of g'reater lengths than the width of the hopper. rlfhe plate 13 is illustrated as being' provided with an elongated longitudinal embossment 1a, which may be pressed or otherwise formed in the plate. Extending from the upper edge of the plate 13 to the top of each plategirder side is a centrally-located stake 15, also provided with an elong'ated embossment 16 and having side and end flanges which are riveted to the sides of' the ear.
0n the inside of the plate-girder side 1 is a plate 17, havingI an edge fiange 18 in the shape of an inverted U. This plate is pressed or formed so as to be spaced a suitable distance from the plate-girder side, and the center of the plate is to one side of the center ot' the hopper. The plate 17 cooperates with the plate 13 in strengthening the plate-girder side near the center of the car, so that the plategirder side is best adapted to resist vertical or other strains d ue to the weight of the load against the doors. The door-operating' shaft 19 projects through the plate 17, through the plate-girder sides, and through the plate 13, and on one end thereotl is a ratchet 20, adapted to be engaged by a pawl 21 in the bracket 22, carried by said plate 13, so that when a load is in the car the shaft will be held against rotation.
l/Vound on a pulley 23, carried by the shaft 19, is a chain 241, connected to a cross-bar 25, from which depends i'lexible connections Q6 and 27, connected to the respective hopperdoors, the pulley and liexible connections being within the housing' formed by the plate 17. The top chord of the plate-girder side is illustrated as comprising' a channel 28, having depending' edges, while the lower chord is illustrated as an angle 29.
1t will be observed that the bracing above described will materially add to the strength of the car and enable the plate-girder sides to resist the various strains to which the car will be subjected in its passage over the rails and that this additional strength is provided for without materially increasing the weight of the ear.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is# A 1. The combination with a cai' having plategirder sides and a hopper-opening in the bottoni, of a reinforcing-plate on each side above the hopper-opening and arranged longitudinally of the car; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a car having plategirder sides and a hopper-opening in the bottom, of a reinforcing-plate having a longitudinal embossment and arranged longitudinally of the car; substantially as described.
3. A metallic ear having` plate-girder sides and a hopper-opening, of a reinforcing-plate above the hopper-opening, and a stake extending from the top of the plateV upwardly and secured to the plate-girder side; substantially as described.
4L. In a metallic car, the combination with plate-girder sides and a bottom having ahopper-opening, of a reinforcing-plate secured to each plate-girder side and having a longitudinal rib, and a stake extending from the top of the reinforcing-plate and secured to the plate-girder side, said stake having a longitudinal rib; substantially as described.
5. In a metallic car, the combination with plate-girder sides and a bottom having a hopper-opening. of reinforcing-plates on the outer faces of said plate-girder sides, a reinforcingplate on the inner face of one of the plategirder sides and cooperating with the plate on the outside of the plate-girder side, and a stake extending from the plates on the outer face or' the plate-girder side to the top of the car; substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof l hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of May, 1905.
THOMAS R. BROWTN.
