Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application tiled December 10, 1903. Serial. No. 184,658.
.To all whom, t may concern:
lle it known that I, lino UANDA, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, in the city of New York, county ol" New York, and @tate et' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Papenliiles, oil which the following is a specification, reference being had. therein to the accompanying drawings, forming a part My invention relates to letter or document liles or tiling-boxes, and. has for its objects to provide for ready access to the contents oli' the iile and for convenient examination or removal and replacement ol" any letter or document Without disarrangement ol the other contents of the file. My invention also has for its obiects simplicity of construction, strength and durability, and case of manipulation and operation.
lliccording to my invention the lile or lilingcase comprises two parts, which may be denominated a body 7 and a n cover and which are hinged together and when in closed position completely cover, protect, and inclose the letters or documents therein. The separators employed within this iile are loose or unattached, consisting merely ot sheets or cards loosely iitting the interior ot' the lile.
Jaccording to my invention both the body and the cover are provided with walls extending the full height oi the interior of the lile, so that when the lile is in open position either a part or all oi the contents of the iile maybe supported Vface upward upon the body oit the tile or may be supported face downward upon the cover of the-file and in either position will be so effectively inclosed or walled in to be retained in the lile.
According to my invention a locking end piece is provided adapted to cooperate with the other parts oi' the lile, and my invention includes various improifements in the construction and combination or parts.
ll will now describe the lile embodying my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will thereafter point out my invention in claims.
ligure l is a vertical central section oif the tile in closed and upright position with separators and letters or documents therein. llig. EZ is a iront elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the lilo in open and horizontal position and with a portion of the separators and contents supported on the body and the remainder of the separators and contents supported on the cover. Fig. lf is a 'liront elevation of the saine.
The two main portions otl the lile are a body and a cover, and these portions are hinged to gether by any suitable means, the base y' of the cover being hinged to the body at the top of the end wall d, this wall extending up from the base fr of the body and being1 ol a height equal to the full interior height of the iile or the full thickness of the interior of the ille when the [ile is in closed upright position. 'lfhe end wall d or the body is contiguous with sectional `front and rear walls e and f, which are also olf the Vfull interior height el the iile and which extend Vfrom the hinged end ol the Y[ile toward the open end of the iile a distance preferably somewhat less than hall the length o1l` the front of the [ile and terminate in in clined ends. The cover also has full-height sectional lront walls /r and rear walls v7 extending Yfrom the open end ol the cover toward the hinged end thereof and terminating in in clined ends, these walls being' ot' such length and their inclined ends so shaped that they will form counterparts to the front and rear walls e and f when the iile is closed (see Fig. l) and torni therewith substantially complete front and rear walls lor the entire lile. Vli`he front and rear walls /t and vf of the cover are contiguous with an end wall g, which is at the open end et the cover and extends the full interior height of the iile.
ln addition to the fulldieight walls above described 'l also provide an outer front wall and an outer rear wall c of the body and an outer lfront wall and an outer rear wall t of the cover these outer walls extending' trom the hinged end of the lile substantially or very nearly to the open end thereot' and being' respectively ol such heights that their total height will equal the full height of the iilc, so that they will abut against each other when the iile is closed, and, as shown, the height o'l' each oit these walls is one-half of the height olI the file. These outer walls terminate in proximity to the open end et the file with inclined ends, against which the inclined edges ot' the hinged locking-piece o will come in contact when the file is closed and the lock ing-piece is closed into locking position. as shown in Figs. l and 2. '.lvhe base j ol the cover is oi? double thickness up to a point in proximity to the open end, where it meets the edge of the locking-piece o, so that the locking-piece when closed is lllush with the base of the cover, and as it is also lush with the outer side walls of the cover and body and the abutting outer walls are flush with each other the file when closed has a smooth exterior surface. This locking-piece o opens out readily to permit access to the contents of the file, as shown in Figs. 3 and t, and may be readily and quickly swung into its locking position, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
The separators p may be indexed upon their edges in the usual manner. No fastening device is required for them. They loosely tit the interior of the file, and the full-height retaining-walls on the body and cover at all times retain them in place. Thus they are self-adjusting to any variable spacing which may result from uneven or irregular filling of the spaces between them, and they are also capable of being readily lifted out from the body of the file and placed face downward upon the cover, as hereinafter described.
Then access is desired to the contents of the file, the lile is most conveniently opened out upon a table or other horizontal or nearly horizontal surface. The body of the iile will lie flat on the table,` and the locking-piece will also lie flat on the table, so that access is readily had to the indexed edges of the separators p. The cover will then occupy an inclined position, and its reinforcement or double thickness will enable it to sustain this position without distortion. Any portion of the contents placed upon the cover will be prevented from sliding olf the cover by the full-height wall g at the open end of the cover. The full-height front and rear walls z. and c' of the cover will prevent the contents from sliding oli' the cover in any other direction. It will therefore be possible to lift from the body of the file and place face downward upon the cover any part or all of the contents of the file without disarrangement of the contents of the tile, and thus access may be readily had to any of the contents of the file and a selected letter or document will be fully uncovered and may be examined or removed and put back again in its proper place without disarrangement of the contents of the file. During the inspection of the letter or document it will not be necessary to hold up the separators and contents which are in advance of this letter or document in the ile, as they will all have been removed and placed face downward upon the cover of the lile, and the examination of the letter or document in a ile may be suspended at any time and the iile left open without fear of covering or concealing the selected document. Upon the completion of the examination of the letter or document the tile need only be closed and all of its contents will fall into their proper places.
For convenience in handling the file and pulling it out from a row of similar files I provide a handle or ring g, which is secured to the double-thickness portion of the body .Comprising the front outer wall and the front full-height inner wall c.
The construction above described possesses obvious advantages in the provision of double thickness where strength is desired and in the manner in which the several parts reinforce and strengthen each otherand readily pass and overlap each other in the closing of the lile. The full-height walls are so located as to effectively perform their work 0f inclosing and retaining' the contents of the lile without interference or obstruction to the desired ready access to the contents of the lile when the lile is open.
It is obvious that various modifications may be made in the construction shown and above particularly described within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is#
