' This invention relates to an improvement in file drawers and more particularly to the drawer head'thereof.
' The preferred embodiment lof the inven-V 5 tion discloses a file drawer head in which a compartment is formed. A key-controlled door is provided in one of the walls of the head, thel opening of which gives access to the manipulation of one or more card file retaining rods. Y., j
In certain kinds of offices it has been found desirable to provide a file cabinet, the drawer structureof which is such as to prevent the unauthorized removal and at the same time permit.` examination of le cards, folders, papers, etc. Heretofore, this has not been possible inasmuch as the end of the rods, by whichl the cards are retained, projected beyond the drawer head and could be readily withdrawn. The present invention is designed to make use of the space between they inner and outer drawer head walls for locating. thehead of oneor more card retaining rods. A key controlled door formed in one of the walls ofthe drawer head gives access to the removal or insertion of these rods and the subsequent removal cf the contents of the drawer. v p
The principal object of the invention lies in the provision of a drawer head having a door formed, in one wall thereof and by which access to the interiorof said head may be had,
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of a drawer head having a compartment adaptable for receiving the ends or .knobs off file card retaining rods and suitable means for preventing unauthorized removal of said rods.
Other and further objects of the invention will be more clearly understood from a consideration of Y the following specification which is taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and in `which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a cabinet, showing a partly opened drawer, embodying one form of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the drawer head shown in Figure 1 with the file card retaining rod in place;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showingV the drawer head door (opened, and the rod removed to permit withdrawal of any of the tile cards and- I Fig. 4is a rear view, partly broken away,
showing the location of the door which -is mounted in the drawer head.
- Referring to the drawing, one modification of the invention is shown in a file drawer,"
generally indicated by the reference numeral 10.V The drawer l0' is mounted in a. file cabinet 1,1 andcomprises a drawer head -12',"side wallslB and bottom Wall14. v l Y The drawer head l2 isc'omprised ofinner and outer plates 16 land 17. The outerplatel bottom Hanges 23 and'24 respectively. Y A' Aflange valong the upper edge25 of this plate' corresponds tothe side and bottom flanges and continues in averticaluliange 126which terminates in an acute angle flange" '27.y Flanges 25 and y26 form a shoulder which, when the plates 16 and 17 are joined, engages the flange 18 of the outer plate. Flange 27 ofthe inner plate acts as a spacer. The bottom flange 24 of the inner plate 16 may be permanently secured to the bottom Vof the drawer 14 in any desired manner. It will be noted that a chamber or compartment 29fis formed within the drawer. It will also be noted that a `compartment such as provided in the disclosed structure generally results from standard drawer head construction and, therefore, the particular assembly of the plates 16 and 17, the size of the compartment 29, and theV drawer pull 30 and its means of attachmentform no part of this invention and will not further be discussed.
The outer plate 17 is cut to provide a l screwed or otherwise suitably fastened. A
lock 36 is mounted on the inner face of the door, the head 37 of which projects through the plate 17. A stop plate 38, secured to the inner face ofthe, plate 17 projects slightly beneath the upper edge of the door opening 32 and thus limits the inward movement of the door. That portion of the'plate 38 'which projects into the opening 32 termi! bolt 40 of the lock may be engaged.
nates in afhorizontalflange 39 with which the Secured to the inner plate 16 is a reinforc-` ing plate 42. A threaded opening 43 is made through plates 16 and 42. A file card retaining rod 44 projects through the opening 43 into `thespace within the body ofthe drawer 1 0'. The outer end of the rodr 44 terminates inralnurled head 45 `on which a threaded portion'46 is"forme'd, 'which engages the threads ofv the openingy 43. The rod44, when mounted "in" Ythe, drawer, as indicated inY FigureV 2, prevents removal of any of the `cards 47. By unlocking the door 34, and
allowing itfto'dropdown to the position indicated in Figurey 3, the head 45' ofthe rod is exposedto' view and the rod maybe dis-`r engaged from the plates 16 and 421and withstated.
Although applicant has shown but one modification yjof'his invention,he does not intend to be limited thereto since `it isv obvi# ous to thoseV skilled in the art that other modifications or adaptationsV maybe made withoutl departing from' the spirit and scope of the inventionV as set forth in the hereunto annexed claims.
v"Having'thus set forth my invention' what I claim as new and for which I desirejpro-V tection by Letters Patent is:
