JOHN H. YOOUM, OF ASHLAND, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 79,716,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN H. YooUM, of Ashland, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves and Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref
erence being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part of this specification. My present invention relates to certain means for applying my provision for the removal of slag, slate, Src., from stationary grates, patented January 28, 1868, No. 73,767, to the Hat grates generally employed in cylindrical stoves, furnaces, 85e.; also, to the provision of a iue, to carry oftl the dust created in raking down the ashes, &c. c
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a cylindrical heating-stove embodying my improvements. Fig. 2- is a vertical section of the same on the line .r x. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the fire-box of a hotair furnace with my improved grate applied, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section thereof on the line y y. In Figs. 1 and 2, A represents the stand, and B the lire-chamber, of a cylindrical heating-stove. G is my improved grate, which is with an aperture or indentation, c, in its front edge, of any suitable-form, and large enough to permit the passage through it of slag,'slate, and other unconsumed bodies of too great bulk to pass through the ordinary interstices. The bars c converge to this point, so that the slag, 85e., may be readily raked to it from all parts of the grate. The stand A is ofordinary construction, having the usual ashdrawer A', and an opening, a, for the introduction of the poker for raking down. The re-chamber B is provided with the usual brick or cast-iron lining B', and has also a tube, D, situated, by preference, directly over the aperture c, and opening at any desired point abovethe top of the flue, to convey off the ashes, &c.
It may be formed by means of a partition, E,
dated July 7, 1868.
secured in the cylinder in any suitable manner, and when so formed the lower end of said partition may compose a shield, F, to prevent the coal from falling through the aperture c.
The tube may, however, be made in an other suitable manner, and the shield be made either in one piece with or separate from it, and be supported over the aperture in any suitable manner. lhe shield mayalso, if desired, be east with the grate.
1n Figs. 3 and 4, B represents the shell of the fire-chamber; a', the door of the ashpit; G, the grate g c, the slagapertures; and F, the shields, for protectingthe apertures c. The shields are' here represented as cast on the front plate of the furnace; but it is obvious that they may be formed and supported in any of the Ways hereinbefore described, or in any other suitable manner. I propose having any requisite number of the apertures c, and, when desired, making grates having a number of suchapertures with converging bars.
The slag aperture or apertures may also consist of a perforation or perforations in the grate instead of indentations, as represented.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The provision,in aflat or horizontal grate, or in a grate-bottom, of one or more apertures, o, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, Vwith the aforesaid aperture or apertures o, of one ormore shields, F, as and for the purpose specified` 3. Constructing a grate having one or more l apertures, c,'with bars converging toward said aperture or apertures, for the purpose described.
4. In combination with a grate having one or more slag-apertures, c, the dust-line D, arranged and employed substantially as and for the purpose specified.
i J. H. YOGUM. Witnesses:
WM. A. BENsINGER, M. M. MooK.
