, Zetters Patent No. 79,688, dated July 7,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOG-THOUGH.
,TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
L Be-it known that CHARLES F. ROLFE, deceased, late of Laconia, in the county of Belknap, and State of New Hampshire, did, during his lifetime, invent a certain new and improved Hog Trough; and that I, CAROLINE M". BOLFE, of Laconia, aforesaid, administratrix of the estate of CHARLES F. ROLFE, deceased, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, which will enable those skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. v
This intention relates to a new andimproved hog-trough of that class which are provided with pivoted covers, so hung and arranged that, by adjusting the latter in one position, the trough will be exposed at the outer side of thcpen or sty, and rendered accessible for the pouring of'food into the trough, while the latter is shut off from or rendered inaccessible to the hogs in the sty, and when the cover is adjusted in'the other positicn, the trough rendered accessible to the hogs. I I
The invention consiststin a peculiar construction and arrangement'of the cover, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a very economical and durable trough of the kind specified is obtained.
In the accompanying sheet of dra .'vings Figure 1 is a vertical section of the invention, taken in the line :a x, fig. 3.
Figure 2, a vertical section of the same,'taken in the line 3 3 fig. 3.
Figure 3, a plan or top view of the same, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a portion of a pen or sty, which maybe constructed in any propel-manner, and B represents a rectangular frame, constructed of wood, of any suitable dimensions, and fitted in a rectangular opening made in the planking or boards. a at one side of the sty. I I i This frame is provided at its front or outer edge with cleats, b, one at its top and one at each side, to abut against the outer surface of the planking or'boards, an'd limit the inward adjustment of the frame,
I In the lower part of this frame the trough C is placed permanently, and in the frame, above the trough, a cover, D, is fitted and hung upon pivots, or a shaft, 0, so as to turn freely thcreon'.
This cover is equal in width to the interior of'the frame, the pivots or shaft on which the coveris hung being about over the centre of the trough, so that the cover may be moved-or adjusted in either of the two positionsshown in fig. 1, the trough being exposed at the outer side of the pen or sty, and cut ofi' from the inte' rior of the same when the cover is in the position as indicated by the red outline, and when adjusted inthe position as shown in tint, the trough renderedacccssiblc to the hogs within the pen or sty. e
The cover may be retained in either of the positions specified by means of a pin, a passing through holes in the side of the frziine.
To each side of the frame 13, near its inner edge, there is attached a cleat, d.
The inner-sides of these cleats are bevelled or made in dove-tail form, (see fig. 3,) and between said cleats and the inner surface of the planking or boards a, vertical keys, E, are driven to hold the frame firmly in position.
By knocking out these keys at any time, the frame, cover, and trough may be removed.
Any desired number of frames, B, may be fitted in a pen or sty, according to the size of the latter.
All the parts may be constructed of wood at a very moderate cost.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. The detachableframe 13, provided with the trough G and cover 1), constru'cted and arranged substantially in the manner asand for the purpose set forth.
2. The securing of the frame in the side of the pen or sty by means of the cleats b d,. andkeys E, subetantially as shown and described.
