UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SUSPENDERETTES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed December 14, 1904:. Serial No- 236,808.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo NnwToN PHELPS STOKES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenderettes, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to suspenderettes or trousers-supporters by which the trousers or breeches are attached to an upper garment, as a waistcoat or outing-shirt.
The suspenderette comprises separate means for detachably engaging the waistcoat and the waistband of the trousers, the latter being very readily detachable, and a web, preferably elastic and longitudinally adjustable, by which these engaging means are connected.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a suspenderette or trousers-supporter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the manner of attaching the same to the garments which it is designed to connect.
1 designates a safety-pin, the lower bar 11 of which is provided with a buckle 12, adapted to engage a web 2 at any desired point of its length. To the lower end of the web 2 is secured a clip 3, consisting of front and rear depending jaws 31 32, having swinging motion one toward the other, and a cam-lever 33 for locking them in their clamping position.
I ordinarily attach the safety-pin 1 of the suspenderettes inside the waistcoat adjacent its vertical side seam on each side and preferably so as to take advantage of its double thickness and so that the upper bar or pin 13 of the safety-pin'l may be hidden by the pocket 41 of the waistcoat 4:, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This permits the clamping of the upper edge of the waistband 51 of the trousers 5 between the jaws 31 32 of the clip 3, the jaws being firmly held in their clamping position by the cam-lever 33. It also permits the use of a very short piece of webbing, the strain on which is substantially vertical, so that accidental displacement is practically impossible.
It will be seen that each of the two suspenderettes employed is placed directly over the femur joint of the wearer, so that while the trousers are fully supported there is no strain whatever on any garment or on the attachments caused by either the movement of the legs in walking or by stooping or by any bending of the body at the hips.
1n neglige costume when no waistcoat is j worn the trousers may be supported by attaching the safety-pins of the suspenderettes to the outing-shirt at the side of the wearer and in the same relative position as shown in Fig, 2 of the drawings.
Among the many advantages of the suspenderettes are their simplicity and economy, the ease with which they can be cast ofi? from the trousers, and the very important fact that the weight of the trousers is carried not by narrow bands across the clavicle, by which injury is often caused, but rather by a garment which covers the entire shoulders and distributes the strain, so that it is quite unfelt by the wearer. In addition, the suspenderettes are quite invisible, even though the waistcoat should be accidentally raised in front, and all the annoyance well known to bachelors of lost buttons is avoided.
While the safety-pin portion 1 of the de vice is detachable from the waistcoat whenever desired, it is of good practice to provide each waistcoat with a pair of suspenderettes, which need not frequently be removed therefrom. It is evident that the lower clip portion is very easily detached from the waist: band of the trousers while securely clamping the same and being free from liability to accidental displacement. By attaching the lower clip to the waistband of the trousers a little to the rear of its natural vertical position the front of the waistcoat may be held snugly against the figure of the wearer.
It is evident that modifications may be made of the attaching portions at each end of the web as these per 86 form no part of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A trousers-supporter comprising uppergarment-engaging means, a lower engaging clip, said clip having a pair of depending jaws for engaging the inner and outer faces of the trousers-waistband, and positive means for locking said jaws in their clamping position, and a short vertically-disposed web portion connecting said upper engaging means and said clip.
2. A trousers-supporter comprising uppergarment-engaging means, a lower engaging clip, said clip having a pair of depending jaws for engaging the inner and outer faces of the trousers-waistband, and positive means for locking said jaws in their clamping position, and ashort vertically-disposed web portion connecting said upper engaging means and said clip, one of the said last-named parts being provided with means for longitudinally adjusting said web therein.
3. In combination a shoulder-supported garment and a depending trousers-supporter detachably secured to said garment and provided with positively-secured and readilydetachable means for engaging the waistband of the trousers.
4. In combination a waistcoat and a pair of depending trouserssupporters detachably secured to said Waistcoat one near each lower edge thereof adjacent the line of juncture of its front and rear portions and provided with positively secured and readily detachable means for engaging the upper edge of the waistband of the trousers.
5. In combination a waistcoat having pockets adjacent its lower edge and a depending trousers-supporter comprising a safety-pin engaged with said waistcoat within one of said pockets, a web portion and means for detachably engaging the waistband of the trousers.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC NEWTON PHELPS STOKES.
