UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed April 29, 1.905. Serial No. 257,970.
T0 all whom t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BLE CUYER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a folding or knockdown box designed particularly as a delivery-box for groceries and characterized especially by a compartment in the bottom of the box suitable for the carriage of eggs without breaking. For this purpose a compartment is formed in the bottom of the box, which has a removable cover forming a false bottom for the box which serves to sustain the weight of other articles which may be placed uponthe same.` The box is therefore suitable for the deliery of eggs in connection with other goo s. y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the box. Fig. 2 isan end view. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a cross-section. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the parts arranged differently. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing the box folded, and Fig. 7 is a cross-section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 6.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the bottom of the box, and 7 and 8 fixed low side and end pieces secured thereto.
9 indicates folding end pieces hinged to the upper edge of the end pieces 8 to fold or drop inwardly, and 10 indicates folding side pieces hinged to the upper edge of the side pieces 7 to fold or drop inwardly upon the top of the end pieces 9 when the parts are folded. For this purpose the end pieces 8 are of less height than the side pieces 7, the difference being at least equal to the thickness of the folding end pieces 9. Strips 11, extending along the inner side of the sides 7, form ledges for the false bottom to rest upon, and the compartment is preferably divided by a partition 12.
The false bottom consists of two pieces 13, hinged at the middle, as at 14, and of proper size to fit within the box and to rest upon the ledges 11. These pieces are notched at the sides, as at 15, to allow them to pass the side hinges 7a, but the ends are left plain, so that they will engage under the knuckles of the end hinges'8a, so that the bottom cannot come out or be removed without folding or buckling the same on the hinges 14. Fingerholes 16 allow such action to be effected. A small sliding bolt 17 acts to prevent such fold, so that said bottom will not fall out even should the box be overturned.
The compartment under the false bottom is of proper size to form the egg-carrier for which it is intended, and the eggs may be held therein by means of ordinary pasteboardstrip fillers, (indicated at 18.)
If desired, the false bottom 13 may be folded and placed edgewise at the middle of the box, forming a partition extending the full height of the box to separate any kinds of goods at will.
Hand-holes 9a in the end pieces afford grips for carrying the box. When the folded sides are open, they are held by hooks 21 at the corners and when folded are so held by a hook 22, connecting the side pieces 10.
. When the box is folded, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, it can be used very conveniently for the shipment of eggs and in any event will occupy little space when not in use.
It is frequently desirable in delivering groceries to carry eggs without breaking in connection with other articles, and the covered compartment produced by the construction above described provides a space in which the eggs can be placed with the other articles above the false bottom andiout of contact with the eggs and withoutl danger of breaking, wherein the device has obvious advantages over an ordinary box or basket. In addition to its usefulness with respect to eggs the compartment may be used for the carriage of butter, glassware, or other soft or breakable stuff.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
A folding box comprising a bottom, lower fixed ends and sides having upper folding ends and sides hinged thereto by interior hinges, interior ledges on the fixed sides, and a removable false bottom formed of hinged sections resting on the ledges and engaged at the ends under the knuckles of said interior hinges.
'In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
