KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That I, HENRYfA. LEE, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inMoulding and PlaningMachines; and I dolhereby declare' that thefollowing is a full, clear, andexuct descriptionofthe same, reference being 4had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of, this ispecfication;A and iu which- Figure 1 represents -a perspective view ofso much of a to illustrate my present improvements.

To enable those skilled in the art to which'my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail. V y A A 'In the drawings, the part lettered A is the main frame, upon one'end of which are mounted thefeedi-rolls Lee moulding and planing-machine as is necessary B Band B B. Y
The rolls B B are supported in hearings, a', tted in slots orrecesses 'cut or'formed in the side-pieces of the main frame, 'one of which is seen in-ig. 1.
r-Tlie boxes or bearings rest upon the heads of screws or. bolts, and lare held down by screws ,-which pass through thev caps c. Bythis arrangement the rolls B B can be adjusted up or down.
The journalsof the upper lfeed-rolls BBare supported in the boxes d d, which are -ttedtowork iu the slots or grooves c e, concentric with shaft C', in the wings-C C of the sliding piee'es D, the lower ends,rD, Vof which have slots, j, through which the holding-rod 1 passes. `The lower ends, D', are tted-in slots or recesses, g, in the sides of the main frame, whereby the sliding pieces, I), which support the bearings of thev upper feedrolls, are retained securely in their proper positions.
A central shaft, C', passes through the sliding piecesD, and is provided, on each end, with a spur-gear, 2, to mesh into the gears 3 3 3 3 on 4the journals of Vthe feed-rolls B B'. I
The shaftC has, on one end, a spur-gear, 4, which meshes' into` the spurfgear 5, the journal-cfv which is supported in the ends, (i 7of the links 8 and 9. Gear 5 meshes into gear 10 on the outer feed-roll B.
'I he bottom feed-rolls B B are, atithe opposite side of the machine, providedpwith gears 11 11, which both mesh into the middle gear 12, which turns upon a stud ori-journal, fast in the side of the main framer' The feed-rolls B B are held down hy `the rods13 13, which are hooked upon .their 'journals at each end, the rods 13 being drawn down by the weighted levers 14 14, hinged to the lower end,rD, ofthe slide-piece D.. as fully indicated in fig. 4. v
The lower ends, D', are formed with inward'projections, 15, t-o receive the elevating and depressing-screws 16, supported in. bearings 17, and havinggears, 18, `to fit the gears 19 on the shaft 20,v which runs across the` machine, and by the turning of which the screws 16, Yone being attached to each side of the machine, can be revolved to4 elevate or depressthe slide-pieces YD and the top rolls B Bf, wheneverdesired.
It will be seein, from the foregoing-description, that the feed-rolls B B can both rise and fall-independent of each other, while 'at thesame time their gears 3 3, at ea'h end, remain in gear with the gears 2 2 ofhthe stationary central shaft C', the mesh of the gears being the same at all times, owing to the fact that the boxes or hearings d d, of the rolls B B,`move in circlesconcentric with shaft C.
Motion is imparted to gear 4, fast on the end of shaft-C', from the gear 10, on one of the lower feed-rolls,
through the intervention of ythe gear 5, supported'in. ythe ends 6 and 7 of the links 8 and 9, which are fitted to turn on thejournals of the shafts of the gears 10 and 4, as indicated in the drawings. A

'laces The feed-device. above described is strong, and at the same time easy of adjustment in every respect, thus avoiding much friction and many ofthe objections incident to other modes of constructing the feeding-mechanism of moulding and planingmaehincs 1 .After the slides D have'been elevated or depressedY to any desired position, they aro fastened and held securely in place by the holding-rod 1, in th'c following-manner: A nut, v, is tted into a groove -er slot, fc, in one of the sliding pieces, D, and through which the holdingrod 1 is screwed, while upon'the other end of the same screw or holding-rod-l are two nuts, 4'w w, one of which answers as a check-nut. llhe'point of the'rod 1 passes beyond the nuts w w, and enters the side of the frame A,'as fully shown in Figpre 6, which is acentral section ofthe rod and theparts near it. When in this position,l the slides D D are clamped securely without occasioning any spreading of thesides of the frame A. To loosen the sliding pieces D D, holding-,rod 1 is unscrewed, which withdraws the shoulder t, of the wheel A', from the side of'frame A, and nuts w w from the side of the projecting part D' of thefpiece D.
The cylinder or cutter-head E is supported in bearing E E', which' are fitted to slide up and down on the faces of the stands F F. Combined with the bearings E' E' are two 4adjusting-screw shafts, G, supported at their lower ends by boxes m, fastened to the inner sides 'of the main frame, and having shoulders 23, which rest on the anges of the` stands F F,-as fully shown in figs. 1, 2,'and 4.
Upon the lower ends ofthe shafts Gr are gears 21, to mesh into gears 22, one on each end of shaft 24. ,By this arrangement the cutter-cylinder E can be set up and down with great convenience, and when once adjusted can be securely fastened by the screw-bolts n n, which pass throughslots in the stands 'F F, while the gearing, by which theadjustment is effected, is all below the top of the frame, and thus out ofthe way of the workmen, and less liable to become clogged by iiying chips and dirt. I

The cutter-heads J J are' fastened to the upright shafts K K, near their upper en ds, while the drivingl pulleys K' K are fastened to their'lower ends, which are stepped in the projections L L on the bottoms of the upright bars M M, the lower ends of .which are notchedout to t the cross-bars 30 30, and upon which they rest and slide. The upper ends of the bars M M are supported upon the cross-barsor rods 31 31, which pass from side to lside of the main frame. l v
The u richt shafts K K ass throuffh the roections L' L', u on the'u er ends of the bars M M, so that P e P D P .l P PP the shafts K have a secure support, jus't under or below the cutter-heads J J, while the upper ends of said shafts extend above the cutter-heads, and are supported by the bearings N4 ri-secured to'th'e slotted cross-bar N' by screw-bolts 32 32, which pass through the slot or'opening 33 in barlN'.
' The bearings N N'ha've lips, 34 34, which lap over the top of the bar J. which has legs or stands, O O, by which itis fastened to the sides of the main frame, so-as to occupy an vintermediate position between `the shafts AK K, whereby it answers for the support of both Aof the upper bearings of the shafts K K, one bearing being fastened on each side ofthe bar.
The s'hafts K K can bel adjusted to orvfrom each other by simply loosening the screws 32, and sliding the bars M M upon their respective cross-rods 31 3l, and cross-,bars 30 30.
- Ifpreferred, the cross-rods' 31 31 may be provided with screw-threads to fit and work in threads inthe hars M M, adhandavhecls, whereby they can be turned byihand to'adjust the shafts K, or either of them, independently of the other,vto cutmouldings upon pieces of wood of different sizes or widths. i
It will be seen that the upright shafts, upon which-the cutter-heads `J J are placed, are rmly supported both above and below the cutter-heads.
Those skilled in'the art of cutting mouldings will at once appreciate thisf'part of my invention, since it -'obviates one great difficulty heretofore met with in the practical operation of moulding-machines in which the .shafts do not have a top support.
In 'thislast-named cla-ss of machines, the cutter-head, when driven '.rapidly, vibrates so much as to make chattered or uneven work, an objection which is entirely obviat'cd by luy-mode of supporting the shafts both above and below the cutter-heads, as above described. l
In the'drawings, a piece of material, P, is represented' as being fed through between the feed-rolls B B B' B', and it will be noticed that the upper feedrolls, B' B', have been elevated', but lthe gears of said rolls' remain in mesh. on the true pitch-line, and thus work as free and easy in one position as another.
