'.lhat I, FRANK J. PLUMMER, of the city and `county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, .have invented certain new land useful Improvements in Matcher and PlaningMachincs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of Vthis specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of so much of amatching and planing machine asis necessary to illustrate my invention. l

The nature of my invention consists in so -combining the matcher-head or spindle-frame in a planing and matching machine with the bed of the machin e, as that the mateher-heads can be turned down out ofthe way and below the surfaceof the bed B, to permit ofthe convenient planing of boards of any'desired width. Also in such a. peculiar construction of mechanism as that 'the operation of turning the matcherfheads Acan be performed in a veryexpeditious and convenient manner, and also whereby, when desired, the parts can be adjusted again with equal facility for matching. A
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in detail.
In the drawings, A A represent the sides of the frame, and B the stationary partof the bed over which the material is fed. The part C of the bed B to which the matcherlheads or spindle-frames D D are attached, has heretofore been cast with the bed piece, but is in thisinstance cast separate from that, and is provided with two arms a, one near each end, which .extend hack end are hinged to lugs or projectionsb upon the under side of the bed B. Only one'of the arms a and lugs b is shown in the drawings, the others being just opposite those shown. The front part c of the swinging part C of the bed B is made in V form, to tits. V-shaped groove planed in the backs of the upper ends of the matcher or spindle-frames D D. The matcher-heads E E are placed on the vertical spindles F F, supported at the top by bearings d d fastened to their respective matcher-heads or spindle-frames D D. The lower ends Aofthe spindles F F are stepped in the bearingsde e fast to the frames D D. Motion'.is cominunicated'to spindles F by means of pulleys G G- secured to the spindlesby setscrews ff. From the lower ends of the frames D D extend the arms H H, having oblong holes g in their enlarged parts I, while from the rear of the enlarged parts I project anges L, which are grooved or slotted outasseen at z', iig. 4, to`
receive the endsj of the horns J, which are fitted upon the hubs K of the slotted cam arms L L upon the shaft M, the latter having a groove to receive splines in the hubs K of arms L,L,so that while the latter can be moved back anid forth upon shaft M, they are caused to revolve or turn with said shaft whenever the latter is turned, by means of power applied to the hand-wheel M on the end of said shaft, which is supported in proper bearings in the frame A. Just` inside of frame A is-`aI ratchet-wheel, N, fast on shaft M, while a pawl, m, is fitted to turn upon a stud, n, which is fastened to the inside of the frame A, as indicated in the drawings. The small ends o o of the bolt-arms O O pass through the oblong holes g g in the enlarged parts I ofthe arms H H, and are held in place by the nutspp on. their outer ends. The outer ends o o of said bolt-arms are also turned down small enough to pass-through the slots y in the cam-arms L L, and allow the hanged friction-rolls 1 1 to be'shipped on to the ends of said arms, so as to occupy theposition as respects the ends of the bolt-arms and cam-arms shown in the drawings for the purpose of lessening the friction between the parts. The friction-rolls 1 1r are held in place by the nuts 2 2. In this instance washers 3 are placedupon theV ends o o before they are passed through the slots y in the arms L L. These washers, in combination with the iianges 4 4 on the frictior-rolls 1 1, serve to retain arms L L and H H in their proper position laterally. The slots g/ in the arms L from the points 5 to 6 are made upon a circle concentric with shaft M. From the front side of the swinging bed-piece C, and near each end, project two ears 7 7, and between which are hung the bolts 8 S having nuts 9 9,
so that when Athe parts are to be used in the positions shown in iig. 1, these lbolts 8 8 are turned up between the ears 10 10, which project from the front of the bed B, when nuts 9 9 are turned down upon the top of lbed B, thus drawing the swinging bed-piece C up firm against the bottom 'of piece B. Gear S is bored out large enough'to receive the small end of the thimble-piece 15, which is first passed through a hole in the hearing-piece 16, when gear S is slipped on to its end on the other side, thereby forming a shoulder on each side of the bearing-piece 16, the gear and thimble-piece being held together by the' set-screw 17, which passes through them both, as' fully shown in fig. 5. The bearing-piece 16 is fastened to frame'A. Gear S may be made with a huh of suihcient size to have a groove turned in it large enough to use a common divided box or bearing to support the gear and its shaft Q. I have shown only so much main frame and other parts of a planing and matching machine as was'necessary to illustrate my invention. Frame A may extend to any desired length, and horizontal planing' cutters may he arranged both behind and before the matcher-heads E E in the usual manner. Itwill be observed that when the swinging bed-piece C is drawn up and the nuts screwed down upon the top of the ears 10 10, the upper ends of thespindles F I" are held firmly in place, while the horns J J being turned up firm against the rear ends 7L L ofthe arms H H, and the paw-l m dropped into place in the ratchet-wheel N, all vibration of the lower ends of said spindles is prevented. The horns JJ can be adjusted upon the hubs K means of set-screws 18.
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to use the machine for planing without matching, the operator turns up the nuts 9 9, and turns the bolts 8 8forward, as shown in (blue liners) fig. 2. He then turns out setscrew 17 and pulls shaft Q out, as shownin (red lines) gfl, thereby disconnecting shafts Q and P, He Anext raises pawl lm, and by means of the hand-wheel M turns shaft M and its cam-arms L L and horns J J back, and by which operation the arms H H are drawn back, together with frames D D and spindles F'F, whereby the'matcher-head and bed-piece C are depressed and swung down and back, as fully shown in red lines in g. 2 of the drawings. i
It will therefore be seen that by my invention the matcher-heads can be turned down very quicklyout of the'way and below the surface of the table B, and that, too,'without disturbing the relative positions of the matcher-heads and their frames and spindles, When the matching mechanism is to be used again, shaft M is turned forward, forcing the parts back into the position shown in (dark lines) iig. 2, when the bolts 8 8 are turned up and nuts 9 9 screwed down, as before explained, thus holding the matching mechanism in place; pawl m dropping into position to hold the ratchet-wheel N and shaft M, and the parts connected therewith. Shaft Q is now pushed in so as to connect with shaft P, and set-screw 17 turned down, and the parts are again inv proper position for matching. By the use of oblong slots g g in the arms H II, the bolts O O can be very accurately adjusted, so as to enable the friction-rolls 1 1 to play with ease in the slots y y in the arms L L.
Those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs will readily appreciate the advantages to be derived from my improvements. I I
Having described my improved matching machine, what I claim therein as new and of my invention,` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. Supporting the matcher-spindles and heads in a swinging frame constructed and operated substantially in the manner and for the purposes stated.
2. I claim, in a machine such as described, the combination of the swinging matcher-head bed'orframe with the arms H, cam-arms L, and shaft M, substantially as herein shown and specified.
3. The combination of the arms H and connecting bolts o with the slotted cam-arms L, in the manner and for the purposes described.
4. The combination with the arms H H of the horns J J and the'shaft M, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination with the rear ends of arms H H of thel projections I I, and loblong holes or slots g g, for the purposes stated.
