Description

M. WELLS.-
Lightning-Rod Bracket.

. Patented July 7,1868.
MARTIN WELLS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 79,618, dated July 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN'POINTED BRACKETS FOR LIGHTNING-RODS.
die grist-n12 numb in in tins: infirm 33am rut making part at the sum.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY. CONCERN:
Be it known that I,MARTII{ WELLS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful article of manufacture of Brass Electrical Fluid-Conductor Brackets for securing lightning-rods to buildings; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a. full description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in combining with the bracket :1. receiving and discharging-point, for the purpose of conducting the electrical fluid away from the building, and thus-preserve it from damage by lightning. I
But to describe my invention of a new article of manufacture of brass electrical fluid-conductor brackets,
for securing lightning-rods to buildings, I will refer to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, the same letters of reference, wherever they occur, referring to like parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bracket and lightning-rod as attached to the building.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the bracket.
Letter A'represents a bracket, made of brass, having in its centre an opening, B, for the insertion of the lightning-rod C, and'on its front edge a spear-like pointer, D. The object of this pointer is to act as a conductor of the electrical fluid, and thus at each bracket discharge the fluid that may be passing down the rod, and thereby relieve it from any excess of the electrical fluid, which is apt to be dispersed if the rod is small and any other conducting-substance is near by. I
Letter E are ear-pieces, for securing the bracket to the building F, or other suitable support.
I am aware that pointers have been used for tipping lightning-rods, and also used as spurs on the edges of lightning-rods, and in combination with glass insulators; I therefore disclaim the use of each and all of the said devices herein mentioned; but
What I do'claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The new article of manufacture of brackets, by combining the discharging-point with the bracket which secures the rod to the building, so that the discharging-point is continuous with the bracket, substantially as described.
