JOSJEPHVVVALE, OF BELOIT, WISCONSIN} Letters Patent N0.79,o15, dated July 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT. IN BAKE-OVENS.
ike fitlgehult rttcrrth tr in tips: Esters, Znttnt amt making pint If tip same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH VALE, of the city of Beloit Rock' county, in the State of Wisconsin, have.
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Bake-Ovens; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are, sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or scienceto which it most nearly apperteins to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment. v
The nature of my invention and improvements consists in providing a rotating even so greatly simplified in construction and arrangement, as well as so very largely reduced in cost ofmanufacture, as to be available to the public for general use not only in large establishments, butforfhotels, eating-houses, hospitals boardinghouses, and large farmer's and families. v
Simplicity of construction and arrangementmust recommend it to public favor.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a perspective view of the exterior of the oven.
Figure 2 is n liorizonta'l sectional view, taken in a line-throughthe oven at the top of the fixed hearth.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the rotating hearth H andshaft .H detached.
Figure 4 is a vertical section nearly through the centre from front to rear of the oven.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures. I
The walls and fixed hearth ofthe oven may be constructed of brick or stone, and of any size required to supply the business't'o be done. I i I ,A representsthe valls and body of the oven, II the revolving hearth and pivot-ed shaft, to which it secured by suitable arms.: The revolving hearth is constructed of suitable sheet metal, supported by metallic arms, and thesaid revolving shaft having a suitable step-box, in which the lower end of said pivot may freely revolve; The said revolving hearth is rotated by inserting the pointed end of a spike or poker into the perfo rations shown in the turned-down edge, or out-er rim :oi' the said revolving hearth II of fig. 3, moving the same with convenient case. i
'C C are firc-gra'tos and the doors opening into thcjsame as shown in figs. 1, 3, and 4.
position.
D D are doors for regulating the drought of the furnaces, and withdrawing ashes from under the grates.
(Z (Z are heavy iron covers'for the fire-fines or furnaces, in the drawings, one of which is removed to show the fire-grate C, fig. 2.
a a is the smoke-flue or chimney. b b are ilucs for admitting the heated air into the baking-chamber directly under and around the rotating hearth. p
y is a sliding damper, by the employment of which smoke and gases are allowed to escape through the flue or chimney a a, and is operated by the hook at y, fig. 2. l
The crown E of the oven is made of heavy shectmetal, suitably supported by ribs or arms, which, however, are-not shown in the drawings The upper end of the rotating shaft ll is pivoted through the centre of said crown 1d, and when in use the said oval disk or crown is covered six to twelve inches deep \vithsand, to prevent C, fig. 2, shows one of the fire-grates. having the iron cover removed, for the purpose of exhibiting its,
the escape of heat from the oven. The furnaces being directly under the fixed hearth, the heat is admitted to the oven directly, circulating under the rotating hearth, ascending by the spaces between the rim of said hearth and the wall of the oven, also up through the opening around the shaft H, pervading every part of the oven at the same time.
The even is operated, in halcing, through the door B, fig. 1. Batches of bread or pastry are placed upon the hearth ll successively, until one revolution has been made, when it will be found that those first placedthereon are sufficiently doneto be removed to the larder. Un'baked hatches take the place of those removed,
and this operation may'bcrepeated and continued without intermission'the year rounda measure of eflieiency almost unbounded.
I am aware that a; rotary oven or ovens have already been patented, and therefore do not claim broadly as such; but V v What I cl:1-izn -as my invention. and desire tosecurc by Letters Patent, is-
lhe rotatingdisk or hearth H, sequreil to and turning upon. the shaft II, and the mode herein described of rotating the snme,.whereby expensive gear and pinions are dispensed with. I
I also claim the crown-plate or disk E, in eombinntion with the fire-grates C C, covers (2 d, fines b b, regulating-damper flue or chimney a afaml aslr boxcs D D, when the whole are constructed and arranged cubstnntially as herein set forth and describeLL-to operate as specified.
