JOHN H. PFLIEGER, OF JOHNSTOVVN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE LORAIN STEEL COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SLOT-SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 795,232, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed March 10, 1904. Serial No. 197,523.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. PFLIEGER, of Johnstown, in the county of Oambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SlotSwitches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to certain new and useful IH'IPIOVGIDGDtS in slot-switches for cable and underground electric railways.
My invention .is designed to provide a switch of this kind which shall be simple in construction and by means of which undue width of slot-opening at the junction of the main and branching track-slots shall be overcome, also to simplify the means for operating said switch in unison with the trackswitch or switches.
I'Vith these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a slot-switch em bodying my invention with the connected track-switches; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. ],and Fig. 3 a side view showing the slot-switch tongue and a portion of the adjacent slot structure and tongueoperating means.
The letter A designates the usual slot-rails a, the slot of themain track, and a the slot of the branching track.
B B designate the adjacent track members, having the movable tongues l) l).
C is the slot-switch tongue or movable slot-point pivoted at C. The upper surface of this tongue is [lush with the upper surface of the slotrails and is tapered down to a slender point 0, while its lower or base portion 0 is continued for some distance beyond this point, as shown at c, and. is made to fit underneath the overhanging surface flanges A of the slot-rails. To support the tongue, a fixed slot-point I), supported by a yoke or gusset-post E, is carried underneath it as far as clearance requirements for the plow or cable. grip will permit.
F F designate two parallel vertical levers, the upper arms of which are connected with the respective switch-tongues b 1), their lower arms being connected by the link G. II indicates an actuating connection made with one of the said levers.
I designates the pivotpost of the tongue 0, which is carried down to the bottom portion of the conduit and is there provided with a bearing I. J is a lever-arm rigidly connected to the lower portion of said pivot-post and extending forwardly below said tongue to a point substantially underneath the point 0. The lever F has below its fulcrum a third arm F which is connected by an adjustable link K with one arm of a bell-crank lever KQ whose other arm is connected by a rod K with the forward end portion of the arm J. By means of this system of connections when the levers F F are actuated to throw the tongues b I) the tongue 0 is also thrown through the arm J. By the provision of this arm J below the path of the plow or grip and extending back to the pivot-post of the tongue I am able to simplify in a large measure the character and details of the operating mechanisms, while at the same time I provide for the proper leverage to move the said tongue. 'It is not necessary in. all cases, however, that the arm J shall extend entirely back to the pivot of said tongue, since a connection may be made between the arm and tongue at any place sufliciently in rear of the tongue-point to give proper clearance for the plow or grip.
I do not wish to limit myself in other respects to the precise details of construction and arrangement which I have herein shown. and described, as these may obviously be changed without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a slot-switch, the combination with the slot structure having a tongue-supporting point, of a surfaceflush movable tongue track-switch tongues and with each other, the arm J connected with the heel portion of I 5 the slot-switch tongue, and an operating connection between said arm and one of the levers F, F, together with an actuating connection for the said levers.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my 20 signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. PFLIEGER.
Witnesses LORETTO OCONNELL, H. SMITH.
