Abstract
18,842. Kneen, W. Aug. 23. Electric and rope tramways, conduits for. Consists in using at junctions an auxiliary pivoted switch tongue which has its free end pointing towards the oncoming plough or the like, and in so arranging this facing switch that a considerable range of movement in excees of that absolutely necessary is permissible, in order that, even if the rail switch is blocked by mud &c., the facing switch will be free to complete its movement. This arrangement ensures correct guidance of the plough or the like and protects the fixed tongue of the conduit. Fig. 2 shows a plan and Fig. 3 a sectional elevation of a conduit junction with the facing switch and operating-mechanism therefor. The auxiliary tongue a is pivoted to the under portion of the fixed overhung slot tongue b. The end of the tongue is tapered so that, even if it is not completely operated, the plough will automatically complete the movement and be correctly guided. The tongue may be operated by thrust rods acting on a rear extension of the tongue beyond the pivot. These thrust rods are preferably moved by the track points. A modified method of operating is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which thrust levers 5 act upon the forward portion of the tongue. These levers only move together with the tongue as far as the edge of the slot, the plough or the like moving the tongue completely over. To permit the necessary movements of the thrust levers, the connexion of the operating-levers is through a pin- and-slot arrangement 7, 8. According to the Provisional Specification, it may be desirable to bring the upper surface of the auxiliary tongue on a level, or nearly so, with the road surface so as to fill up the gap, or to arrange a slide, or slides, to move in and out from the side of the conduit. It is also stated that, in the case where the tramcar is guided from or by means of the conduit slot, the auxiliary switch would be placed on the surface and be of suitable shape to correspond with the curve of the rails.
