Abstract

7910. Hartley, J., and Greenwood, J. April 6. Electric tramways on the overhead conductor system. Points and switches.-Relates to mechanical means whereby the track and conductor switch points of electric tramway systems may be automatically operated from oncoming cars. Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the arrangement, only part of the car being shown, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the tramway track. Pivoted to the tramway rail at 10, and working in its groove, is a doubleended lever 11, which is connected elastically, by the rod 15 and spring 16, to a bell-crank lever 14. A similar connection is made between this bellcrank lever and a second bell-crank lever 19. One of the arms of the lever 14 is connected by the rod 17 to the track switch point 12, while the other arm is connected by means of a cord or chain 25 through the bell-crank lever 26 to the conductor switch 23. To move the points over, the driver depresses the push-rod 1, which, through the levers and rod shown, lowers the bar 7 into the rail groove. As the car advances, this rod rocks thelever 11 on its pivot, thus moving all the bellcrank levers, which operate the point - switches, as desired; simultaneously, the bell-crank lever 19 presses the rod 20 upwards into the rail groove. When the car has passed over the points, they are returned to their initial positions by the flange of the car wheel depressing the rod 20.
