Description

H v ews? "srnorr'ten'rro varaing pare of Letters Patent No. 700,615, dated May 20, 1902a 1b, .aZL ughom itqgtaycoizoepn:
Be it known that I, EnWIN -E-.-OARNE L,- a
citizen 0f the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Oolumbia,-have invented certain new and usefulImprovements' inRailway-Switches, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to railway-switches, and particularly to tramway-switches.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved device for underground electric or cable roads adapted to be operated by an arm or projection from a car through the shoeslot of the road-bed to change the course of the car and to return the switch, so that the following car may not be switched unless desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of parts, and resides, essentially, in a slotted pivoted leverplate connected to and located between a chain of lovers and the switch-frogs.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure l is a plan view, partly broken away, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the chain of levers and the slotted leverplate. Fig. 4: is a sectional view on the line ww,Fig.3.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the views of the drawings.
Although I will show and describe my invention as applied to underground railways, it may be used upon the surface of a tramway or any other railway by slight rearran gemen t.
In carrying out my invention I employ a series or chain of lovers and links which comprise a lever 1, fulcrumed at'2, and reaching across a road-bed the usual electric or cable road-bed slot 3, to contact with a rod or bar 4, depending into the slot from a car, a like contact-link 5, fulcrnmed at 6 on the other side of the switch, a link 7, pivoted at 8.110 lever 1 between the fulcrum'2 and the free or contact end of the link 1, a like link 9, pivoted at 10 to the end of the lever 5 opposite its free or contact end, and a lever 11, fulcrumed at 12 and having one end pivoted :Appl icatioiiiiledfiai nary3,1902. serialllatimll .(Ndjidlgti being provided witha stud or pin 14 ,-;ha-v.ing a leev 0 o l 15. 0.0 3? mou ted t r A lever-plate 16, having a di-agonal orflslants ot 17, n. w the sl ev :1 sl sp t d a .18;. a d-t e.l ver-p a i m va ly secured to the lever 11 by a suitable nut upon the stud or pin 11. The lever-plate is projected beyond the slot 17 and the lever 4, and such projection has pivoted to it one end of arms 19, and the other end of said arms is pivoted tothe switch-frogs'ZO at 21. Fulcrumed posts 22 for the chain of levers and links and alike post 23 for the lever-plate are provided, and vertical rods 24E connect the arms 19 to the frogs.
The depending rod 4 may be operated in any suitable manner upon approaching a switch to contact with the contact-levers 1 or 5, which will move the latter and the lever 11 on its fulcrum, which movement will be imparted to the lever-plate through its slot and move the said plate, which will carry the switch-frogs with it. v
It is obvious that the slidingof the stud or pin of the lever 11 in the plate-slot will push the said plate to throw the frogs as desired and that one contact-lever being operated will operate the other contact-lever, thus antomatically opening and closing the switch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an automatic device for operating railway-switches, the combination of a pair of fulcrumed contact-levers,a slotted fulcrumed lever-plate positioned lengthwise the railway and connected to the switch frogs, and a chain of levers connecting the contact-levers with said plate.
2. In adevicefor operating railway- 4 switches, the combination with the fulcrumed chain of levers, of the pivoted lever-platehaving a diagonal slot and operated by one of the levers of said chain, and the arms connectin g the lever-plate with the switch-frogs.
switches, the combination of the contact-levers at right angles to the railway, apivoted lever-plate lengthwise the railway and connected to the switch-frogs, the links connected to the contact-levers, andthe lever pivotally connecting the'links together and fulcrumed so as to give the free end of the lengthwise lever a transverse movement.
6. In an automatic device for operating railway-switches, the combination of the contactlevers at right angles to the railway, a diagonally-slotted plate lengthwise the railway and connected to said levers, and connections from the switch-frogs to the said plate so that the movement of the latter will work the frogs. v
'7. The combination with the contact fulcrumed levers, and the links one of which is pivoted to one of said levers at one side of its fulcrum-point, and the other of which is pivoted to the other of said levers at the other side of its fulcrum-point, of a lever crosswise the railway and operated by the said links, and a diagonally-slotted plate lengthwise the railway and operated by the crosslever to work the switch-frogs. y
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
. EDWIN E. OARNEAL.
