Description

No. 795,061. PATENTBD JULY 18, 1905. J. IIILSATNBEKS. GOMPASSES.

PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB PILSATNEEKS, OF RIGA, RUSSIA.
COMPASSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 795,061, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed November 4, 1904. Serial No. 281,363.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ACOB PILsA'rNEEKs, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at 9 Grosse Newastrasse, Qu. 30, Riga, in the Empire of Russia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Compasses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates'to improvements in compasses, and comprises an instrument which is specially designed for setting out angles.
The compasses constructed according to this invention have three legs, two of which are adapted to be moved in planes which are perpendicular to each other, one of said legs being capable of prolongation proportionately to the angle of its opening between itself and the third leg, so that it will always form the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle of which said third leg is the perpendicular. Preferably the prolongation of the aforesaid leg is effected by means of a curved arm provided upon one of the other legs. This arm may be furnished with a graduation in order to enable any desired acute angle to be set out by the adjustment of the prolongable leg in case the distance between the other legs is constant.
In the accompanying drawing I have represented a perspective view showinga preferred constructional form of my said invention.
To the prolongation a of the leg 5 of compasses 6 (Z cwith two legs 6 0 is jointedathird leg 0 by means of a jointf, the axis of which is perpendicular to the axis of the joint d. The leg 0 can be prolonged, this prolongation taking place in quite a definite relation to its angle of opening with reference to the leg 6, so that the opened legs will always form a right angle w.
The prolongation of the leg 6 may be effected in various ways. In the constructional example shown I provide for this purpose on the leg 6 a curved arm is, the form of which may be determined by any mathematical or graphic method. The leg 0 carries a rod or lengthening-bar h, guided in lugs g on the said leg. Upon the upper end of this bar It ment may also be employed in case the distance between the points of the legs 6 and 0 is constant for setting out any desired acute angle y by the adjustment of the leg 6 It, as this angle depends on the distance between the points of the legs 6 and e h. In this case the arm is provided with graduations indicating by their coincidence with the outer edge of the bar I) the size of the angle y.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"
1. Compasses of the character described having three legs, two'of which are adapted to be moved in perpendicular planes, a lengthening-bar carried by one of these legs, and means for moving said lengthening-bar longitudinally in proportion to the angle of opening of the bar-carrying leg, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. Compasses of the character described having three legs, two of which are adapted to be moved in planes perpendicular to each other, a lengthening-bar carried by one of these legs, and a curved arm secured to another of said legs and arranged to determine the longitudinal movement of the lengthening-bar, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. Compasses of the character described having three legs, two of which are adapted to be moved in planes perpendicular to each other, a lengthening-bar carried by one of these legs, a curved arm secured to another of said legs, a pin on the lengthening-bar, and means for keeping this pin in contact with the curved arm, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
4. Compasses of the character described having three legs, two of which are adapted to be moved in planes perpendicular to each other, a lengthening-bar carried by one of these legs, a curved arm secured to another of said legs, a pin on the lengthening-bar, and a spring provided upon the latter for forcing said pin against the curved arm, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
5. Compasses of the character described having three legs, tWo of which are adapted to be moved inplanes perpendicular to each other, a lengthening-bar carried by one of these legs, a curved arm secured to another In testimony that I claim the foregoing as of said legs and provided with graduations, my invention I have signed my name in pres- IO and means for movlng said lengthening-bar ence of two subserlbing Witnesses.
longitudinally proportionately to the angle 1 5 of opening between the bar-carrying leg and JALOB PILSATNEEKS' the leg to Which said arm is secured, sub- Witnesses: stantially as and for the purpose herein set ARTHUR BULLOCK,
forth. VEDER EIOHMANN.
