Description

2 NITED STATES Patented July 18, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
LUGGAGE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 79 1,9 18, dated July 18, 1905. Application filed February 23, 1905. Serial No. 247,694.
To (tZZ whom/ it 71mg concern:
Be it known that I, J osurn J ACOB RIsoHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Luggage-Carrier, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in carriers for luggage for the use of porters, traveling men, and others to assist in carrying heavy articles such as grips, suitcases, baskets, hampers, and the likeand has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device applied. Fig. 2 is a enlarged perspective view of a modified form of the stay or brace portion of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail View, in perspective, illustrating the manner of forming the joint in the modified construction shown in Fig. 2.
The improved device comprises a harness portion for suspension from the shoulder and a brace or stay member connected to the harness portion and bearing against the person of the wearer and likewise utilized to support the luggage to be carried and holding it spaced from the person wearing theimproved device.
The harness portion of the device consists of a strap 10 for passing over the shoulder and having hooks 11 12 at the ends. The shoulder-strap will also preferably be provided with a chest-strap 13, connected by the ends to the shoulder-strap and passing around the person beneath the arm, as shown in Fig.
5 1, to retain the shoulder-strap in position.
illustrated the preferred The shoulder-strap 10 is provided with adjusting means, such as a buckle 14:, and the chest-strap 13 is also provided with an adjusting-buckle 15, and to render the adjustments effective the chest-strap is arranged slidably upon the shoulder-strap, as at 16, and'riveted thereto, as at 17 at the other end.
The stay or brace portion of the device is represented as a whole at 18 and provided at one end with a yoke 19 for bearing against the person of the wearer and connected at the other end to a handle member havinga handgrip 20 on one side and a socket 21 on the other side to receive the handle of the luggage to be carried, the latter indicated by dotted lines at 22. The stay member is also provided with spaced loops 23 24 to receive the books 11 12 of the shoulder-strap, which for convenience of attaching and detaching are of the snap form. The stay member is preferably formed of a single piece of wire bent into the required form, as illustrated in Fig. 1, with spaced sides having the yoke 19 bent therefrom at one end and with studs 25 26 at the other end for engaging bearings 27 28 at the ends of the handle member.
By this simple arrangement a valise, grip, suit-case, basket, hamper, or other article of a similar form may be suspended from the handle member and easily carried by the person 4 wearing the harness without being annoyed or havlng his progress retarded by the luggage coming in contact with his limbs. A comparatively heavy article may thus be carried without inconvenience.
The device may be constructed of any required size or of any suitable material and can be inexpensively manufactured.
In Figs. 2 and 3 a modified form of the construction of the stay or brace portion of the device is shown which may be employed, if required. In this construction a joint is shown at 29 to enable the handle portion to be separated from the body of the stay, so that the device can be packed in a smaller space when not in use.
Having thus described the invention, is claimed is 1. In a luggage-carrier, aharness compriswhat ing a shoulder-strap having terminal hooks, a I
brace member having loops for receiving said terminal hooks and with a yoke at one end for hearing against the person and a handle member atthe other end provided with a handgrip upon one side and a socket upon the other side for receiving the handle of the luggage to be carried.
2. In a luggage-carrier, a harness comprising a shoulder-strap having terminal hooks, a chest-strap connected by the ends to said shoulder-strap for passing around the person beneath the arm, a stay member having loops for receiving the terminal hooks of said shoulder-strap and with a yoke at one end for bearing against the person and means at the other end for supporting the handle of the luggage to be carried.
3. In a luggage-carrier, a brace member formed from asingle piece of wire with spaced sides having loops bent therein and connected at one end by a transverse yoke and with studs extending at the other ends, a handle member connected to said studs and provided with a hand-grip at one side and a socket upon the other side for supporting the luggage to be carried, and a harness comprising a shoulderstrap having terminal hooks for engaging the loops in said brace member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH JACOB RISCHARD.
