SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,804, dated July 18, 1905.

Be it known that I, JOHN J. I-IUTTo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winfield, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Armored Protectors for Cars or the Like, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a protector which in its preferred use is designed to be placed in express-cars for enabling an express-messenger to effectively guard himself and the valuable parcels and other matter which are commonly intrusted to his care.

Generally speaking, the invention embodies a guard box of armored construction and of a size sufficiently large to receive at least one man and a safe associated with the guard-box and adapted to receive valuables of any kind. The guard-box is provided with loop-holes and is supplied with ammution and firearms, so that immediately upon attack by robbers the messenger may quickly cast the valuables into the safe, if they are not already therein, and, seeking refuge in the guard-box, he may readily defend himself and his charge by use of the convenientlyarranged firearms.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

l/Vhile the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a car, showing the invention appliedthereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 3 is a view similar toFig. 2, partially broken away, looking toward the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 2. Fig.

4 is a transverse sectional view bringing out more clearly the lock mechanism for locking the cover or top of the safe. Fig. 5 is a combined view showing a corner portion of the safe and the cover, parts being broken away.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated 5 5 in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Since the invention is primarily utilized in connection with express-cars, same is shown in position in a car of any approved construction, and, as before premised, the protector consists, essentially, of a guard-box 2 and a safe 3, adjacent to the guard-box and rigidly attached thereto in the preferred embodiment of the invention. In fact, opposite sides 4 of the guard-box 2 are of L form, be ing extended at the lower portions thereof to form opposite sides 5 of the safe. The guardbox 4 is of a size convenient to admit a man, the safe 5 being of course quite a little 7 smaller, since the valuables ordinarily carried may be readily received in a smaller receptacle. The box 2 is preferably of somewhat rectangular form and the safe of similar construction, and the sides of the box and safe, 7 5 as well as the top of the box and cover for the safe, are made of metal, preferably steel, in order to afford an armored structure adapted to effectively prevent penetration of bullets or the like. The guard-box 2 is provided upon all sides, preferably, with a number of loop-holes 6, so that the person within the box may have range in all directions to defend himself from attack. The loo -holes 6 are provided upon the interior 0 the box 2 with guard-plates 7, having suitable handles 8, and these guard-plates normally close the loopholes, being adapted to be readily opened, however, to admit of passage of the barrel of a firearm therethrough in firing. At one side of the box 2 is mounted a door 9, and this door is preferably of the horizontallysliding type carried by rollers 10, moving upon a suitable guide-barll, arranged at the upper portion of the casing or box 2 aforesaid. 9 5 The door 9 is provided with lock mechanism 12 of any suitable construction. The safe 3 is provided with a removable top or cover, said cover being of peculiar construction. At opposite sides of the safe and projecting later- 1c 0 ally from the upper portion thereof extend flanges 14;, and the cover 13 is provided at corresponding opposite side edges with curved keepers or flanges 15, adapted to engage over the flanges 14 of the safe-body and afford a rigid connection between the cover 13 and said safe. In order to dispose the cover 13 in proper position inclosing the safe, the said cover is slid rearwardly toward the box after the several flanges 15 have been engaged with the flanges 14 of the safe. The cover 13 is provided at its outer portion with a suitable handle 16, and from the inner extremity of the cover projects an extension 17, adapted to pass through a slot 18 in the adjacent side of the box 2, The extension 17 is provided with a slot 19 therein, and a latch member 20, forming a part of lock mechanism arranged upon the interior of the box 2, is adapted to engage the extension 17, said latch member passing through the slot 19 and effectively locking the cover 13 from displacement. The latch member 20 is preferably pivoted to the side of the box 2 adjacent the safe 3, and a spring 21 normally cooperates with the latch member to cause the same to engage with the extension 17 as the latter is forced through the slot 18 when the messenger or operator throws the cover 13 into position upon the safe.

As a simple means for reinforcing the lock mechanism, which embodies the latch member 20 and which is carried by the side of the box 2 adjacent the safe 3, a lock-bar 22 may be employed, the said bar being mounted for vertical movement in guide members 23 upon the side of the box 2 carrying the member 20. The engaging member 24 is pivoted at 25 to the box 2 and is pivotally connected at one end with the lock-bar 22, the opposite end of the engaging member 24 being adapted to engage over an extension 26, projected from the member 20 and arranged horizontally thereof. An arm 26 projects laterally from the upper end bar 22, and such arm is provided with a cam 28 at a point near its outer end. The arm 27 is arranged at the side of the box 2 upon which the door 9 is mounted, and a projection 29 extends upwardly from the upper portion of the door 9, being adapted to ride against the cam 28 of the arm 27 in order to raise this arm at a predetermined point in the movement of the door. Thus after the messenger has entered the box 2 and upon closing the door the projection 29, extending from said door, engages the cam 28 of the arm 27, raising said arm to the bar 2. The engaging member 24 is also raised at one end and the opposite end is forced down upon the extension 26 of the latch member 20, thereby rigidly holding said latch member 20, reinforcing the latter in a manner which will be obvious.

The cover 13 has a rearward-sliding movement. in placing the same in position upon the safe 3 by means of stop-flanges 30, which project upwardly from the rear portion of the cover and are designed to engage the adjacent side of the box 2 in accomplishing the function above mentioned.

The door 9, by which the entrance to the box 2 is closed, is provided with a suitable handle 13 and the safe -lock mechanisms which are utilized lock the door 9, and the cover 13 of the safe 3 may be key-operated, if desired, in which instance suitable keyopenings 32 would be provided. It will be noted that the safe 3 is an entirely-separate receptacle as regards the box 2; but the ar rangement of the safe is such that as soon as the alarm of an attack is communicated to the messenger he may quickly close the safe 3, if not previously closed, and entering the guard-box 2 it will be seen that it would be very diflicult to dislodge him from his protection, thereby all likelihood of robbery bein prevented.

IHaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a guard-box, a safe associated with the box, a cover for the safe, an extension projected from the cover aforesaid into the guard-box, and lock mechanism cooperating with said extension to prevent displacement of the cover.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a guard-box, a safe, a cover for the safe removably applied thereto, flanges projecting from sides of the guardbox, keepers or flanges projected from the cover and cooperating with the flanges of the safe to hold the cover in place, a guard-box being provided with an opening in a side thereof, an extension projected from the cover of the safe through the opening in the guard-box, and lock mechanism arranged Within the guard-box and cooperating with the extension aforesaid to prevent displacement of the cover.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a guard-box, a safe, a cover for the safe removably applied thereto, flanges projecting from sides of the guardbox, keepers or. flanges projected from the cover and cooperating with the flanges of the safe to hold the cover in place, the guard-box being provided with an opening in a side thereof, an extension projected from the cover of the safe through the opening in the guard-box, the extension being provided with a slot, a latch member arranged within the guard-box and adapted to enter the slot of the extension of the cover to prevent dis placement of the cover, and stop-flanges projected from the cover and cooperating with the guard-box to limit the movement of the cover.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a guard-box, a safe, a' cover for the safe, a door for the guard-box, lock mechanism arranged within the guard-box and cooperating with the cover of the safe to prevent displacement of said cover, and engaging means cooperating with the lock mechanism aforesaid to reinforce said look mechanism, said reinforcing means being operated by the door.

5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a guard-box, a safe, a cover for the safe, a door for the guard-box, lock mechanism arranged within the guard-box and cooperating with the cover of the safe to prevent displacement of said cover, an engaging member mounted in the guard-box 15 and cooperating with the lock mechanism to reinforce the same, a lock-bar for actuation ofsaid engaging member, an arm'projecting from the lock-bar, and means carried by the door for actuating the arm aforesaid, substantially as described.
