HARLOW, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, ,and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Shearing Ma'chinesg and I do hereby declaro that the followingis afull, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. l i

Figure 5 represents a bottom view ofthe screw and worm-gear for operating the feed-shaft. The nature of my invention .consists in constructing a-machine toenable the voperator to trim or. shear bristles, wool, fur, felt, silk, or other brous and ezrble material to a` uniform length, and give the same a smooth and even surface.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my machine, I will proceed to describe thesame.
In Athe'annexed drawings, A represents the table or bench, on andunder which the different parts of my machine-are secured and work, 'and B represents the stand 'or base supporting the table and maehine..
C C represent the upright framework, and D the horizontal part of the framework supporting the cutters g g, and movable or sliding plate E.
Adjusted and working up and vdown on the'uprights C C, are curved or bent horizontal bars X X, said bars being secured at any elevation desired by means of suitable set-screws.
These horizontal bars afford a support to the material to be cut or sheared, and furnish a'gauge so that the material may be cut of any length desired.
I? represents a vertical column or shaft, which supports' the feed-shaft p, by means of a' suitable slotted arm, as shown,
p representsa shaft, provided-with a series o f teeth or -knobs`, having-bearings in slots in the table A, and -the arm of the column F. The shaftp is held steady in itsl bearings, and soas to give the pressure by' means ofthe springs q q, so as to conform to the thickness ofthe back ofthe brush, and, bymeans ofits teeth or projections, to slide the' same along behind the horizontalbars X and thereby feed the bristles projecting between said bars up to the cutters g g.
Secured to the lower endofthe feed-shaft p, beneath'the table A, is a worm-gear, 0,'whicl1 meshes with` the screw or worm-n, on the shaft m.
6 represents a shaft, adjusted horizontally on the table A, and has the driving-pulley aattached to one end of it, and a crank or eccentric-pin projecting from the other end, by which the movabley cutterr'or shear g is operated up and down by means of the` conn'ectingllink C and slide E.
The shaft b has another pulley, K, attached to it, which isI connected bya :band to a. pulley, Z, on one end of the shaft m, and thereby operates said shaft with its worm or screw n.
A The slide E works up and down in and against a suitable vertical way or guide,'S,-to which lone of the cutters or shears g is secured. A The horizontal part-of the frame D is provided with a slotted arm, asshown in lig. 3, in which the top of the guide S is secured, the bottom of said guide being secured to a movable table, R.
The table R rests and works on atrack or tongue on the main table A, and is secured thereto by means of screws and bolts, which work in suitable slots in the 4table A. The tablei'R ismade adjustable, so that the cutters g gand guide S may beset or gauged at any desired distance from the jaws or horizontal bars X X, to
correspond with the length it is desired to cut the bristles or 'material of the brush. Y l

It will thus be seen that the brush is automatically fed or moved up to the cutters g g, and trimmed or sheared neatly thereby. v 4
Having thus fully describedmy invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the stationary toothed knife vg and movable toothed knife g, with the guide S and slide E, whenconstructed to operateas' set forth. A
2. The combination of'the sliding table R, guide S, slide and cutters'gg, with the slotted arm of the beam D andtable A, for the purpose of adjusting the gutters g g at any desired distance from thcjaws or bars X X, as specified'. Y
'3. The feed-shaft ja, adjusted in the slottedbars, and held' by thesprings g, in combination with the cutters y g, arranged upon the sliding table R, to operate .substantially as set forth. v
