UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoEd `WILLIAM Gr. AYRES AND SETE L. COLE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGN- ORS TO HENRY A. SNOWDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-TRIMMING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,423, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM G. AYREs and SECLH L. COLE, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Trimming Wall-Paper; and we hereby declare in what manner the same is to be constructed by the following specication with the accompanying drawing, which is lettered to correspond with and form a part of the same.
To enable the public to understand the nature of our said improvement, and those who are skilled in the art to construct and operate the saine, we will describe it, as follows, to wit:
Figure 1 is a perspective drawing, showingthe entire machine. 4
A'A' A" is the stationary frame-work. B and B' are the driving-pulleys or band-wheels that operate the horizontal shafts R and R' and the vertical revolving knife K. The cuttin g-edge of this knife operates conjointly with the cutting straight-edge of the stationary plate K', which constitutes and forms a part of the horizontal knife-adjusting strip N. fThe bearing M of the rotaryY knife K is also secured to the knife-ad! justing strip or bed N, which is operated (horizontally) by the set-screw S to set the knife K and plate K' to suit the different widths of the margins of the wall-paper to be cut; and the said strip or bed N may be adjusted during the operation of trimming so as to adjust the edge of the knife K and plate K' to suit any irregularity of the print without stopping the machine. G is a gauge, that may be operated by either a screw or spring upon the shaft R to hold the edge of the margin of the wall-paper in its proper position against the inside vertical. face ofthe frame A, which keeps the paper on a line with its edges parallel to the cutting-edge of the knife K and and under theknife K and from thence it passes down and is secured around the hinged or jointed rod, where the end of the trimmed wall-paper is held (by means of a wire, W, or other device) from turning upon the hinged rod R. This rod is provided with a tongue that fits into the slotted end of the axis of one of the small cogged pinions, as shown at J. A small pin passes through the tongue of the rod R and slotted end of the axis, so as to constitute a hinged joint that may be operated by raising the free end of the rod R to any required angle to remove the roll of wall-paper aft-er the same has been trimmed and rolled up ready for use upon said jointed roller or shaft R. The dottedlines indicate the position of the wall-paper as it passes from the back roller R' to the front roller R.
We are aware that circular knives are in common use as applied to the end of feed and other rollers for trimming wall-paper, and that springgauges and movable tables are in, common use to adjust the wall-paper to the cutters or circular knives as it passes under the said knives, which may be secured at either or both ends of the feed or other rollers for trimming purposes; therefore we do not claim these as any part of this application. But Ithe novelty of our improvement is wholly confined to the arrangement of one movable knife, K, operating upon one short bearing in combination with a flat stationary straightedged steel plate, K', both being` secured to one end of a iiat movable strip or bed, N, which adjusts the cutter K and plate K' to suit the width of the margin of the wall-paper to be trimmed, and not vthe margin to suit the cutter K and plate K' 5 also, the construction of :a frame, A, so that its inside vertical face will hold the marginal edge of the wall-paper parallel with the cutting-edge of the knife K and plate K', in combination with the hinged rod R, or otherwise, we believe to be new and useful to the public; therefore,
What we claim as our improvement, and wish to protect byLetters Patents of the United States, is-
1. The arrangement and combination of one movable cutter, K, with a straight-edged steel plate, K', both being secured to one end of the movable strip or bed N, that will horizontally adjust the knife K and plate K' to suit the width of the strip or margin of wall-paper to be cut,
and not the paper to suit the knife7 substantially In testimony whereof We hereunto --subseribe in the manner and for the purpose set forth. our names in the presence of two Witnesses.`
2. The frame A to hold the Wall-paper on a WILLIAM G. AYRES.
line with the cutting-edge of the movable knife SETE L. COLE.
K and plate K', in combination with the hinged rod R or Without the same, all arranged and op- Witnesses:
