KNOCKDOWN WINDOW-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,444, dated July 11, 1905,

Application filed October 15, 1904. Serial No. 228,517.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTENOR AssoRA'rI, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Knockdown VVindow-Box, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a window-box which may be easily and readily secured in position in the window for use as a receptacle for provisions or other articles which it may be desired to protect.

A further object is to provide a box of this character which may be swung down out of the way when it is desired to get at the window-panes for the purpose of cleaning and the like.

A still further object is to provide a box which may be folded into a very compact bundle for purposes of shipping or stowing away.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an inside view of a portion of a window with my improved box secured in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, the box being shown in dotted lines swung down out of the way. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of the box in its folded position after the sides have been removed. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a view of one of the removable sides.

In the present instance the box is shown of general triangular form, the bottom of the box being denoted by 1, the diagonal top by 2, and the removable sides by 3. The top 2 is hinged at its lower end to the outer end of the bottom 1, as shown at 4. The bottom 1 is provided with side clips 5 and the top 2 with side clips 6 for embracing the lower edges and outer edges, respectively, of the sides 3 when the sides are inserted into position to comp 'te the box.

by 9 and 10. In the present instance I have shown these hinges 9 and 10 as attached to cross-pieces 11 and 12 on the under face of the said top.

The sides 3 are provided on their inner faces with ledges 13 14, upon which the folding shelves 7 and 8 rest when unfolded into position for use.

The bottom 1 may be provided withsuitable ventilating-holes 15, and the sides 3 may also be provided with ventilating-holes 16.

The bottom 1 of the box is provided with means for removably securing it to the window'sill, which means in the present instance comprise hooks 17, carried by the bottom, and eyes 18, carried by the sill. The top of the box is also provided with means for removably securing it in position, whichmeans comprise flexible connections 19, secured to the upper end of the top 2 and provided with hooks 20, arranged to engage eyes 21 on the outer sides of the window-casing.

To permit the box to be dropped down out of the way when it is desired to gain access to the window-panes, I provide suspension devicessuch, for instance, as chains 22 secured at their lower ends to the front pair of side clips 5 and provided at their upper ends with hooks 23, engaged with eyes 24 on the outside of the window-casing. \Vhen it is desired to swing the box down out of the way, its top and bottom are disconnected from the window-casing, thus permitting the top to swing outwardly away from the window, the entire support for the box being taken by the suspension devices 22. hen it is desired to remove the box and ship it or stow it away, it may be removed entirely from its engagement with the window-casing. The sides 3 may be removed, the shelves 7 and 8 folded up against the top 2, and the bottom 1 also folded up against the said top. it will be seen that this arrangement permits the box to be folded into a very compact bundle.

It is to be understood that this box may be made in various sizes to suit different require- In the present instance I have shown it of sufficient size to inclose only the lower portion of a window.

Access to the interior of the box may be readily obtained by raising the lower sash of the window.

What I claim is- 1. A knockdown window-box comprising a bottom, a top hinged thereto, a. shelf hinged to the under face of the top, and sides removably secured to the top and bottom.

2. The combination with a window-casing, of a box, means for removably securing the top and bottom of the box to the casing and suspension devices connecting the lower portion of the box with the casing for permitting the box to swing away from the window.
