SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,369, dated July 11, 1905. Application filed August 18, 1904. Serial No. 221,187.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNARD S. D. S. MAR- TIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at McPherson, in the county of Mo- Pherson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen-Doors,of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to screen-doors; and the object thereof is to provide a door of this class with a supplemental top screen which is so formed and applied that the space between the door and the door-frame will be closed by the supplemental top screen when the door is opened, so as to prevent flies and other insects from passing intoa house or room over the door when it is opened to permit of the ingress and egress therethrough.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a screendoor provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a plan View of the supplemental top'screen which I employ, and Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a an ordinary screendoor, and at b the door-frame, and in the practice of my invention I provide a supplemental top screen 0, which in practice is connected with the top of the door and the top of the door-frame in such a manner as to close the space at the top of the door formed by the opening thereof. The supplemental top screen 0 is composed of mosquito-netting or similar and suitable material and comprises a body portion 0 which is substantially triangular in form and preferably provided with a binding 0 of any suitable fabric or other flexible material, and one of the widest sides of the body portion is provided with a flap c of the same material, which when the supplemental screen is in position hangs down at the front,

as shown in Fig. 1, and closes the top portion of the opening formed by opening the door, and in the bottom portion of the flap 0*, as shown in the drawings, is a large triangular recess 0" to permit of the passage of a tall person without interfering with said flap. The supplemental screen is preferably secured in position at the top of the door in such a manner that it will not interfere with the closing of the door, the'edges thereof being secured to the inner face of the door-frame and to the inner side of the door below the top thereof, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3, and this connection may be made in any desired manner, and extending across the side of the supplemental screen, with which the flap a is connected, is a flexible and elastic cord or similar device e, which is also secured to the corner of the door-frame at e and to the corner of the door at 6 and as thus applied it will be seen that the supplemental screen 0 will folddownwardly and inwardly when the door is closed and will spread out when the door is opened, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to close the space between the top of the door and the doorframe, and in this way the entrance over the door of flies and other insects is prevented. It is a well-known fact that in places where flies and other insects abound and where screen-doors are used toprevent such insects from entering a house it is practically impossible, as screen-doors are now constructed and operated, to accomplish this result; but by means of my improvement the desired result is substantially accomplished and the entrance of flies and other insects over the screen-door when the latter is opened is prevented.

Any suitable binding may be provided for the supplemental screen, or it may be used- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A screen for use at the top of doors, said screen consisting of a triangular sheet of flexible material secured directly to the inner side of the door at the top thereof, and to the facing of the door-frame at the top thereof, and the front or free edge thereof being provided with a cord secured to the door and to the door-frame, substantially as shown and described.
